Thats what my non joe fan huge TF fan friend was trying to convince me but I know he is wrong. I do know that Transformers sells much better in North America and worldwide today due to it's non US military appeal, however GI Joe owned the 80's. Joe's toy and comic sales and Cartoon ratings where the highest of all toy properties in the 80's. At one point the Marvel comic outsold Wolverine and Superman. But does anyone remember any sales numbers?

I don't know, but I do know GI JOE rules in comics, toys, and cartoons. I love both cartoons and the many cross over comics and graphic novels, but I love JOE more.

Bottom line... Transformers Movies now will destroy, annilhate, and crush any GI Joe film! Toy wise.. GI joe may have the edge. Maybe if Michael Bay and Spielberg did GI Joe.. it might have a chance... but movie wise... GI Joe will be swept under the carpet!!

Uh yes guys everyone knows Transformers dominates (sales wise not quality wise) in the 2000's but I'm looking for a disscussion about the sales battle from the 80's.

GI Joe was way more popular.
GI Joe figs cost $1.99. the basic TF was 5 to 8 bucks. Why get 1 TF when you could get 3 Joes? The Joe movie might do as well as TF if they ever get us a trailer. The TF movie blew, and the Joe one probably will too.

I think TF has a bigger fan base. The best way to tell is look at the toy section and see what's constantly readily and avail.
I know, it sucks for the 25th line!!? |

I think Transformers were both more popular and sold better. A soldier toy was cool but a soldiers tank that turned into a giant robot was WAAAAY cooler. I Love GI Joe but I think Transformers ruled the 80's over Joes. I don't think that a military toy, regardless of price, was cooler than a car that turned into a robot. I know that all the kids I went to school with all had Joes...we played and traded, but everyone was mad about their transformers and would not share or trade at all. Yes they were more expensive, but they were coveted toys then.
I think your friend is right.

The old ones were lame. It wasn't until Beast Wars that TF became cool.
A boom box that turned into stiff robot? A car that turned into a jumble of arms with a head? I know it's not the point of the thread, and in defense of Transformers, the movie had a theatrical release. None for GI Joe.
