Hey, I found a practically new Volkswagen Jetta left in idling the parking lot. Is it worth it to put insurance on it?

When I found it the battery was practically dead (and died eventually) and it had no signal...leading me to think it had been a couple of days since he/she lost it and it was disconnected. Plus it needed a pass-code...

I swear I am so carefull when it comes to my Joes, my guitars, all of my stuff at home but I must leave my cell phone, wallet, or keys at a store at least once a week? You should go to the Apple Store or call them, I found an IPOD once and Apple traced the serial number and I actually got it back to the original owner.

Besides the obvious moral issue here. They have serial numbers and won't you have issues registering a phone that already has an established account?

I've left small items like that at restaurants and the like, and someone has always turned them in, thankfully, in my experience.
If it was in the middle of the street... thats maybe another story. But I bet somebody called that Ikea lookin' for it at some point. :/

Take it to an Apple Store (or barring that, an AT&T shop) and they'll be able to trace the owner.

If the person knows they lost it (almost certainly) and has documented their IMEI, they can make the right calls to make that phone inoperable.
Or, if you do manage to get it activated but they have the IMEI the phone can be tracked once you start using it. I'd think twice.
