I went to TOYS R US about 1PM on black friday last week. The Star Wars section was completely decimated and the remains fully picked through. I then went to the GI JOE nook ("Dwight, get out of my nook!" That's what she said) and was saddened to see that it looked nearly identical to the previous time I had seen it about three days before. The reality is that SW is immeasureably more popular than GI JOE and probably always will be. Unless the new movie really kicks it into high gear, we will always be fighting a losing battle. I think at least the movie will give it a temporary kick if nothing else.

I think there was a short period in the mid-80's when Joe and Transformers actually outsold SW (at least here in the US), mainly because SW had inferior figures and the movies had stopped after ROTJ. It was a time not so dissimilar to now actually. SW has done and redone just about everything, Transformers and Joe are coming out with movies next year. Hmmm.
Worldwide though, SW rules the universe. Will that ever change? Doubtful. Star Trek and IJ never really competed with SW either, at least for merchandising. |

Personally I think the ARAH GI JOE line was the best toy line in the history of action figures. Vintage Star Wars were a close second. I think most of the new SW toys are unappealing and boring. The Modern JOE line is overall pretty great--I just don't think it can compete with the Juggernaught that is star wars. I wish it could. Its possible in the near future that we could see a healthy JOE line, when fans like us start introducing it to a new generation. After all, the SW line was relaunched in 1995, the MODERN line wasn't until 2007. We definatley have some catching up to do. YO JOE! |

Only becuse kids are still probably going stir-crazy for the Star Wars Clone Wars movie items and now they have a Cartoon on Cartoon Network. It wouldn't surprise me that the parents bought those all for the kids and it's not all the collectors. Yes it is an up-hill battle for the Joes vs Star wars that we can't and won't win... but hey, as long as we are making the Joes disappear from the pegs then Hasbro should just keep on making them!

I hope that the movie does for Joe what Transformers movie did for that line. Throw Resolute into the mix, and GI Joe could become a powerhouse once more.
As for dogging on SW - I was a fan of it long before I had heard of GI Joe, but the superior articulation and accessories won me over pretty fast. I also enjoy Clone Wars, so I can't knock it either.

if kids buy, it means less for adults, but it means more sales and, therefore, more toys for all of us in the future.
oh, and star wars would win. it's nothing against gijoe. it's just that destro never developed a space station that blows up planets.

I am so sick and tired of Hasbro using the excuse that star wars has a bigger fanbase than GI Joe thats why they get all the extras.
That simply is not true. GI joe has been around for 44 years in one form or another ( except for a 4 year hiadus ) longer than any other action figure. Star wars was a movie that had action figures. The only reason the star wars action figures made a come back in the mid 90s after being canceled in the 80s is because they made 3 more star wars movies. GI Joe will be 45 years old when its first movie comes out. How long do you think the star wars toy line would have lasted if they never had a movie. Two years maybe three tops. When Hasbro stoped making GI Joe in the late 70s we all turned to star wars to fill the void. But when they re-introduced GI joe in 1982 we collecters droped star wars and welcomed Joe back with open arms. Kenner canceled the star wars line soon after due to the drop in sales. Some may argue that the success of joe was only due to the cartoon but the cartoon was not introduced untill 1984. The toy line was already a huge success when the comics and cartoon were released. I feel that GI Joe has a much bigger, stronger and more loyal fan base than any other action figure line out there. So Hasbro needs to stop using that as an excuse for giving star wars all the large vehicles(the falcon for $150), Playsets, troop builders & accesories packs and leaving joe without. We want the larger playsets, vehicles, troopbuilders and accessorie packs to!!!!!! |
