If the original SW trilogy hadn't been made, then GI Joe would win by a landslide, but I gotta say it was close when I was a kid.

Yeah, I love Joes, but Star Wars has a world wide audience that Joe can't begin to touch.
They relaunch of toys actually came out with the remastered re-release of the first three films on the big screen and the VHS tapes in the mid-90's. The toy line had been going gangbusters for 3 or 4 years again before Phantom Menace hit the screen. Furthermore, despite Joe's long life - it's been many very different things. The Joes we love now bear little resemblance to how they began or where they've been. Star Wars has been Star Wars (with a few random side-lines) it's entire history. It's just gotten better (the toys, not necessarily the films ;) ). I'm sorry, but it's just not realistic to believe that Joe has a larger fan base. Now, I will admit that the whole Indy craze seemed like a bit of a gamble on Hasbro's part and whether or not it paid off - it's dead now, so that's the end of it unless there's another movie. |

Check out the fan response to the 2003 Cobra Mountain playset (a reworked Star Wars playset with a repainted 2002 figure) for how the Joe fans would take such a playset today.

Sorry but I collect both Star Wars and JOE. However, JOE really does need some more sweet toys!

I think the original Kenner action figures really set the stage for the popularity of the ARAH line. G.I. Joe came along just when SW toys were dying down with a vastly superior action figure. And 25 years later they did the same thing.
I picked up some SW figs when they first came back out around 97 and 98(?), but those figs and even the one out now are just garbage compared to the new Joes. Just my 2 1/2 cents. |

Well, I have to admit Star Wars was always #1 for me as a kid. I'd go back and forth between Star Wars, GI Joe and He-Man from 1981-1985. Then MASK was thrown into the mix in 1985 after He-Man and Star Wars were gone. So from 1986-1988 it was between GI Joe, MASK and Ghostbusters for me.....and I think GI Joe and MASK were tied.
Now, flash forward to the mid 90's and all I collected was SW. Then in Summer '07 I saw the new 25th Joes and was instantly hooked. At this moment I actually think GI Joe is #1 for me, not Star Wars (never thought I would ever say that in a million years). Funny thing is with the new He-Man line my toy collecting has come full circle and I collect Star Wars, GI Joe and He-Man as an adult!

I went to TOYS R US about 1PM on black friday last week. The Star Wars section was completely decimated and the remains fully picked through. I then went to the GI JOE nook ("Dwight, get out of my nook!" That's what she said) and was saddened to see that it looked nearly identical to the previous time I had seen it about three days before. The reality is that SW is immeasureably more popular than GI JOE and probably always will be. Unless the new movie really kicks it into high gear, we will always be fighting a losing battle. I think at least the movie will give it a temporary kick if nothing else.

Did you go and post this on every single forum?
The same thing gets said over and over in response... Star Wars is so much bigger and always has been then G.I.Joe.

I think Hasbro produced WAAAAAYYYY over their means on Star Wars stuff. Whenever the Clone Wars movei came out and the toys went on sale... I was out looking for the first DVD packs. I think it was in July. We got to target at 8:00am and we got to the Joe aisle and it was filled with about 20 people waiting for Star Wars. And then they followed each other all around Waco trying to find any and everything they could Buy N Scalp or collect. If that day says anything about ratio ... its 20 Star Wars Peeps to 2 Joe collectors.
