No, I didn't write this, but I wish I had.
OPINION: Why toys need stories | Toy Industry | Opinion and Analysis by ToyNews Definitely one of the best articles I've read on the subject. Very straight and to the point. This guy created World Race and Acceleracers, which brought me into Hot Wheels when I was a kid. Somehow I ended up in the G.I.Joe after those series ended.

That is close to the reason why we got Joe back. The Joe line had been taken out of production and there was a group at Hasbro that were trying to bring the line back. When they gave the presentation to Stephen Hassenfeld in 1981, Joe Bacall handed him a mock up of the comic book and then they team went throught the presentation for the new line and Joe got his Myth and we got a new set of heroes and villians.

That is a great article! One of the things that drew me towards toy lines like Gi joe and Transformers was the story the toys told and the fact I could continue that story and expand it into my vast universe in my backyard or toy room.

Great article. Those little stories on the back of Joes and Transformers--file cards and tech specs--have given me plenty of fuel for my imagination over the years.

Ok, this article is a serious eye-opener!
It explains a few things from an "other end of the spectrum" POV. I mean sure he's speaking from the sales side, but it makes sense. We all read each scrap of info/bio/tech spec/background, etc. that came with our toys and went our ways with it. But to have someone outside looking in say it is kind of cool. |
