I heard that it is a licensing issue, but does anyone know more of the specifics? I mean is Vince McMahon just being a prick or what? I mean how is that back in the day hasbro could make multiple versions of Sgt Slaughter and do a mail away for The Fridge but we can't get a Modern Era Sarge??? What gives

That, and there are some mixed feelings among the fans. He's one of those characters that people either really love, or really hate, so Hasbro might not be willing to go the extra mile for him.

In reading Bret Hart's book, he talks about how Slaughter cut a deal on his own with Hasbro for the ARAH line, for a significantly larger percentage of royalties than the other wrestlers were getting under their WWF-related toy deal (possbily with LJN still at that time, not sure). He was promptly fired by Vince, according to Bret.
Knowing how Vince is about naming/licensing his performers, I'm fairly sure this is just a WWE stranglehold on the likeness (simply my opinion, I'm far from an insider with any party involved). |

Chances are that when they first did the Sarge, WWE (at the time WWF and no where near the giant entity it is today), gladly jumped at the chance to associate Sgt. Slaughter with G.I.Joe (which was pretty big back then: comic book, tv show and toys). It was a win/win for both sides. Now, Sgt. Slaughter isn't as big of a WWE icon. G.I.Joe isn't as big as it was. So the incentive to tie the two together isn't there. So the liscensing fees would probably be pretty high, since McMahon wouldn't make as much back from the association. Now if Joe skyrockets and Sgt. Slaughter gets big pop again, then it could be different. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

to do the mail in offer they still have to pay for copyrights, design and then production of the figure why do that for a figure that may or may not be well received by the public.I dont think they went through all the trouble of producing the Doc figure without the plan to eventually release him at retail. The Sarge may not be cost effective to them.

There's also a difference in doing a mail-in on a figure they own (Doc) and one they don't (Sarge). Remember, they'd have to liscense Sarge's likeness from WWE on top of what it costs to produce the figure.
Are they seriously going to do that for a figure that may not sell well?

Yeah, it sucks.
I really really really want an official 25th Sarge. But with a little customizer elbow grease, you can make your own. Think of it as a build-a-figure vs. a mail-away. Of course, you still have to paint it and do the detail work, but there are some impressive Sarges that folks have made on this board. |

I wouldn't have made my Sarge if I felt that Hasbro would eventually make him. But with the "verification" from Hasbro in the Q&As that he's out of the question, I went ahead and made my own. Now, if they DO decide to make him down the road, I'll be ecstatic. But I really love my custom Sarge right now. He's my favorite figure. Once you pick up some quality Tamiya acrylic paints (or a similar quality brand) and a quality brush, I swear by it: you will see how easy customizing is. There are several successful customs you can make simply by parts-swapping. If I could master cracking torsos, I'd do even more minimal-paint-involved customs. Sadly, I'm not quite there yet. Faces are the hardest part, so I wouldn't jump in on that. But say, painting Copperhead's tank top black? Painting Serpentor's thighs green and matching the color to V2 Hawk's legs? Swapping Bazooka's lower arms onto Copperhead's upper arms, some details here, adding a belt from Roadblock there... Gung-Ho head, and finally a Sarge hat, that's 95% existing Hasbro parts, with basic base painting. Camo's not that hard. Adding silver details to buckles... Have you seen some of Hasbro's QC? Not that hot. If you match that level, they at least blend in. Sometimes, I actually find that I paint details BETTER than the manufacturer. (Probably because I'm not undernourished and over the age of 12.) Grab a brush and some paints, test out on a spare figure. You'll be surprised how quality it turns out. I know I surprised myself. Now I'm preaching "Customize!" to the masses. |
