Mercer: The Untold Story of Cobra: "The Enemy"
I have always had a fascination with the fact that Joe took on a guy that was a Cobra and have a rewritten backstory in my mind as a way to justify why he is there. Mercer was a former of Seal Team 6, specifically a member of the team that took out Bin Laden. This is a man who lived for battle and literally gave up any aspect of a personal life for the sake of being a warrior. He grew up in an urban area of New Jersey and spent most of his time as a big brother, protecting his little brother. He viewed his Father as a weak man, unable to stand up for himself or properly provide for his family in his eyes. This left Mercer the responsibility to raise his Brother to be a Man and to suppliment the Household income, in an attempt to keep the family whole. While he loved his Father, he knew it was his responsibility was to care for his Mother and Brother. While an average student in school Mercer had natural street smarts and an unbeatable spirit. When focused on a goal, he would not stop and certainly, never quit. He did partake in school sports, but chose full contact martial arts. he was a tougher than nails kid, forced to live an equally tough life. He viewed the Military as the ultimate vision of strength, authority and respect. He knew he wanted to be a Warrior and would apply his Bushido spirit to being the best he could be. He knew he would never wllow himself to grow into the weak minded, bodied and spirited person his father was. As a Soldier, his only connection to a world outside of Special Missions was his family consisting of his Mother, Father and Brother. he never spent much time bothering to develop relationships with women, preferring purely physical encounters, Relationships were anchors that translated to weakness in his eyes. Through intense training and desire to achieve he becomes a Navy Seal. His Little Brother, now in the National Guard and is accidentally killed trying to protect civilians during a protest march in Washington during an Election Year. Due to the sensitive nature of the event, the US Government downplays the death, failing to acknowledge him as a hero that fell in battle, choosing to keep the events as low-key as possible. It is an Election Year and a less-than-scrupulous Presidential candidate chooses to try and capitalize on the situation by taking the stance that the Military presence was irresponsible and that Soldier's Blood is on the hands of the Government and not "The People". Mercer's parents are devastated by this and his deceased Brother's family is left in financial ruin, losing their house, with a newborn baby enroute to boot. His Mother dies of a massive heart attack, leaving his Father alone, miserable and sad. His Father begins to mentally unravel in the process and takes his own life. Through all of this hardship, despite all he had done for his country, it seems no one will help his family in a time of crisis, instead denouncing them, as if they had committed some crime. Mercer, who has always given his all to the defense of his country, as a warrior, begins to lose faith in what he is doing and who he is doing it for, while he watches the only people that matter to him suffer. He has heard whispers of a snake in the night coiling to rebel against the unscrupulous types that used his brothers death for a political edge and gain. He begins to feel used despite knowing that he has killed evil men to keep his country safe. He finally questions what has happened to his country's honor...to the loyalty of those who sent him to battle....to himself. And with that, Mercer accepts an invitation from The Cobra Commander, who promises him change in the form of spirit..a revolution that will bring respect back to those who have fallen defending what once was the most honorable Country in the World. He promises to make Mercer whole again by allowing him to take part in training the ranks of Cobra Elite Vipers. He plays to Mercer's warrior spirit, hatred of weakness and hidden emotion, knowing full well of his skills and capabilities. Mercer joins the newly formed Cobra Army ranks and begins to train a deadly army of Cobra Vipers. Mercer trains hard and fights yet harder, with all of his heart and soul, believing he can make a change and avenge the loss and pain his family has endured, while believing that he is once again fighting for the greater good, for a cause worth his warrior's blood. He likens his efforts to that of a Revolutionary Soldier and vows to make the weak, unworthy, self-serving types pay for the ruin they brought to him. Over a course of 3 years, What he once deemed a group of Freedom Fighters reveals itself to be a self-serving Terrorist Organization. Meeting the likes of Firefly, Zartan and Bludd, he realizes that The Cobra Commander is not a visionary of the people, but instead an empirical madman. The final blow is dealt when he learns that the very people that used the events of his Brother's death for their own political gain are now in power within the White House- and on the payroll of Cobra itself. While this realization and fall from grace crushes him, he knows he must make amends despite his feelings toward the government that he feels betrayed he, his family and his Country. Mercer reaches out to the Anti-Terrorist GI Joe Team, who imprisons him, offering him the opportunity for redemption in the form of a position on the Joe Team. He joins, once again offering what is left of his heart and soul, in an effort to find some semblance of self peace in a world of war. He is now known only as "Merc" as his peers view him as a hired gun, not knowing his classified background and history. He is feared and utterly alone on missions and looked upon as an merciless Warrior rather than a Soldier. He fights fearlessly and relentlessly, like a man waiting for death to find him. His anger and rage are so fierce that Low-Light and Snake Eyes are the only teammates capable of tolerating him, let alone understanding him. Merc has proven himself to his Teammates in battle against his former Cobra allies, but the Joe Team can't help but wonder what lurks within the mind of a man that would find it acceptable to give himself to the Serpent in the first place. Yet, in Merc's mind, all that exists is the fight to restore honor to his family while avenging the tragedy that destroyed the only humanity he once had. __________________________________________________ QUICK NOTE: I apologize if anyone finds this to be offensive or disrespectful. This character bio is based on a world where Cobra has all ready infiltrated our Government through lies and deceit. It is the story of a man who fights because he is afraid to be weak or to lose what little heart he has left. He fears weakness and death isn't even an option for him...as death unto itself is weak. I have the utmost respect for the Military and the Merc's country in my story is a lot more corrupt than that in our reality. This story is strange enough to be real and sad enough to happen and while some details are obviously glanced, I'm sure there are soldiers/warriors out there that resemble poor Merc. |

I liked it. There's enough in television, comics, movies, etc. that go with the shady, back handed government that you described. I'm a Marine and see no disrespect from this. Mercer's one of favorites and I always wondered how it played out for him.

The story works great for the character. Why would he join Cobra? What was the reason he left? How did he grow up and what life altering events shaped his life? You have done a great job with a back story on a character that does not get the attention that he deserves. I applaud you.
