I've said it before, but Heavy Duty has been around, and been the Joe's heavy ordanance guy, since the VvV days. Roadblock disappeared in those days and it was Heavy Duty. Heavy Duty was in the newer DIC cartoon and in the Sigma Six stuff.
Outside of hardcore Joe-fandom, Heavy Duty was the guy. My ex-step-son, who was a Joe-Sigma-Six fan, wouldn't know who Roadblock is, but he does know who Heavy Duty is. Keeping the Roadblock character but with the Heavy Duty name, is trying to please everyone. But again no one seems to be asking, why is it Rip-Cord and not someone else? What makes Rip-Cord so special to be in the movie?

Ok, so explain the law. Why can't they use the name Mainframe? And why, if they own the rights to "Roadblock," aren't they using his name in the comic. And what's the basis for your "reduction" theory? Because the explanation you give is not a reasonable one. But perhaps they aren't being reasonable, I'll give you that, but what's the basis for thinking this is probably the case? I'm not an expert on everything GI Joe, but what haven't I been paying attention to?

At SDCC, someone asked why Heavy Duty and not Roadblock. The response was something along the lines of "I just identified more with the Heavy Duty character". And again, I really think it comes down to Roadblock being very cartoon-ish in the way he's identified with the rhyming. He did say that if there are other movies, we would definitely see more Joes and Cobra members, so don't completely count Roadblock out.
I could be completely off base with this, but it very well may be an issue of the writers/studio not knowing who was as important as others and they decided they needed a black guy and made a completely random decision while not knowing Roadblock's history and figured nobody would care. By the time someone pointed it out, it coulda been too late. I have a feeling he's just going to be a peripheral character anyways, so whatever. |

Look, I'm not trying to be a smart alec with this, my friend, but it's probably because this is a Roadblock/Heavy Duty thread. I am also puzzled about Rip-Cord being in the movie. It doesn't make a lot of sense. And why include such a character at all if you're just going to change that character a lot? why not just choose a different character who better suits the needs/intentions of the writers?

The comics is simple: Heavy Duty is in the movie, Heavy Duty is more recognizable (to a wider range of fans), Roadblock is the better character. So have Roadblock the character but with a Heavy Duty name so that it's more recognizable.

Okay, that's a valid point if they do feel that's the case. They believe the name is more recognizable but feel Roadblock is more interesting. I just find it odd that they think this way because Duke, who's obviously in the comic with the name Duke, in my opinion is just as recognizable as Roadblock, you know what I mean. They both showed up together in the toy line and comics and so that's why I feel that their way of thinking doesn't make sense.

So, I guess I'm trying to understand why it doesn't bother you so much in this case. You and I generally agree on most of these Joe topics, especially when it comes to the history of the characters. Why is this one different for you? Tanksmasher, Fogger, Tall Creeper, you and me... we all usually agree on these kinds of issues. What's different this time?

Now, I completely agree with my Southern colleague, Tanksmasher. However, I think Troynos is making the argument that Roadblock is NOT as recognizable as Duke because his character was on a hiatus for a number of years here lately, while Hasbro used the Heavy Duty character as it's featured African-American member of the team. I feel that move on their part was a mistake; if they had to have such a terrible stereo-type as a "featured African-American" that role should have gone to Stalker, who even I will admit is a more important character than Roadblock.
