It always seemed to me as a kid that whatever figures I wanted, were always at the toys stores (except for, you know, figures that were made the previous year and so on...but any of the figures current to that particular year were always there).
But, of course, some had to be more readily available that others. Like, I remember when I got Flint, he was the last one on the pegs, and his weapons and been removed from the pacakge, but I got him anyway.
However, in the 87 wave, there were always like a hundred Marine-Blue Gung-Ho's...so I guess he was a pegwarmer at that time.
But things really seemed to be different then..I mean, I didn't "hunt", not the way people do now, and no internet, and I still had like 95% of the GI Joes made up until like '89.
On a related note, I didn't really understand how things worked, so I was still checking the racks for old figures I needed. Like, it would be 1988 and I'd still be hoping to find a v2 Snake Eyes on the pegs.

Well, adding onto your thought.. Remember when toy stores were the place to go? Sheesh... Toys-R-Us. Toys used to be stacked floor to ceiling and we also had another place called Lionel Playworld.
Check out this 1987 Safe for work. 1:37Sec you'll see the GI Joes... That's what I remember.
The term peg warmer didn't really exist in my vocab back then being that any given time I could have gone into a Toys-R-Us or Lionel Playworld and found the figure I was looking for.

Sigh, having grown up in the 90s I missed out on these golden years. While I can't stand the look of the new Joe movie, I hope its a blockbuster, so we can see these days again.

I seem to remember the Snow Serpent being a peg warmer. Funny how things change.

I don't remember seeing any pegwarmers. I think I went to a Toys 'R' Us maybe once during my whole childhood. I'm 31 now and I go once or twice a week. I wish I could have gone once or twice a week when I was kid, during TRU's golden era. I can't believe Footloose was a pegwarmer!!! That's crazy. And the Dreadnoks!!! Wow, I'm bewildered.

I'm assuming General Hawk (Brown Jacket) was a peg warmer since up until a couple of years ago, you could easily get him MOC for $20 or so.
Either that or someone found a stockpile of him and flooded the market.
As for what I remember as a kid, I barely remember anything about Joes on the shelves.
1. I had $20 and wanted a Mamba but it was $19.99 and I couldn't cover the tax (Wound up buying clearanced Rock Lords )
2.Got a Water Moccasin for X-mas and it was missing half the vehicle. Went to return it and the store was sold out of it (Guess it wasn't a peg warmer) Got a rain check for it
3. Went back later with said rain check and debated on picking u[p a Wolverine. I forget what I finally got (Wasn't the Wolverine) but I was excited to see the Cobra Commander mail in form in the box....then disappointed that I saw it expired half a year ago.

I remember seeing Techno-Vipers, Frag-Vipers, Dee-Jay, and there were others that slip my mind right now.
I miss the good ol days to be sure. Toys R Us and Children's Palace and Service Merchandise were like going directly to Santa's workshop.
Man I need a time machine.
