Gordon Rottman does a good job of breaking down the training and organization of SF in Vietnam:
So it looks like only the Weapons Sergeants were given an 11B MOS? Also I am assuming any MOS was eligible to try out for Special Forces during the Vietnam War? So for example not only 11B's could try out to be a Weapons Sergeant? A 91C wasn't the only MOS that could go for Medical Sergeant, etc? Quote:
Nice find!
I don't know much about Vietnam era / 70's-80's MOS stuff but my modern approach to guys with MOS's like that (Duke, Beach Head) are that they were former 18B Weapons Sergeants that have undergone a SOF armorer's course. Either the NSWC Joint Armorer's course or the new USASOC SOF-Peculiar Weapons Repair Course. https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=37621 https://www.soc.mil/SWCS/_pdf/SWCS_F...ndbook_web.pdf The above link is VERY handy for figuring out modern SOF training for one's joeverse. I personally can't see Duke transitioning from a support MOS to SF, to me guys like him were more likely Infantry (most likely Ranger Bat)to SF. A small arms armorer is more a full time gunsmith, likely a place for retired gunfighters or guys like GI Joe Extreme's Red McKnox. I glanced at the USASOC SOF-Peculiar Weapons Repair Course and that fits right into the Small-Arms Armorer that several Joes have (I think I counted 8-9). It indicates it is open to 11B Rangers (assuming 75th Rangers and not Ranger-qualified). That would be perfect for Beach-Head. I don't agree with the Club making him Special Forces. Stalker on the other hand has more going for him in regards to being Special Forces though (medic, linguist, intelligence schooling). Would probably need to make Grunt part of the 75th as well. But it doesn't seem to fit in with his codename. If anything Rock'n'Roll was the true "grunt" of the Original 13. Basically only had Infantry listed and no other special skills. PT instructor can't get you far on a battlefield. lol |

Forgot to add....it looks like they made MFF required for all Special Forces soldiers. I know there was talk about it but it looks like it is now a reality.

Which one? I'm pretty sure the Sideshow Beach Head had two head sculpts and 2 berets available (retail vs exclusive). I think one has the ranger flash and this one (see pic below) has the 82nd Airborne Artillery flash

Yeah. I think the same's true of Stalker. He has the regular 75th Battalion in some pics and then the more detailed 75th (with sun and a star) in others. I can't tell if he's 1st, 2nd or 3rd Battalion.

Again I must remark on your ability to find treasure troves of info! I glanced at the USASOC SOF-Peculiar Weapons Repair Course and that fits right into the Small-Arms Armorer that several Joes have (I think I counted 8-9). In the Devil's Due GI Joe Declassified which Larry wrote, he depicts Grunt gaining entry to the Joe Team by ummm winning an essay contest. Weird. Also, in one of his dossiers (early type written notes by Hama so he could keep the characters straight) which evolved into the filecards, Larry wrote a peer profile on Grunt by Stalker wherein Stalker mentions that Grunt rejected an offer to attend Ranger School. I can't find it at the moment (it's just past 4am Saturday my time) but I'll look again and post it when I find it. |

Easy way to tell is by the number of horizontal bars in the flash; 1 means 1st BN, 2 bars means 2nd, 3 means 3rd etc.
