Eric Haney's book "Inside Delta Force" said they all did a course on "tradecraft." A number of the original Joes seemed to have that too. Makes sense that Steeler would get that. He wouldn't have to be slaved to the MOBAT.

The Killer Elite by Michael Smith, makes mention that (at least in the beginning) part of the Operator Training Course included CIA training at Camp Peary aka the Farm. https://www.amazon.com/Killer-Elite-.../dp/1250006473 Flash and Breaker have Covert Electronics School training which I believe nowadays is the Technical Surveillance Operators Course (Basic & Advanced) which teaches technical surveillance electronics and advanced concealment development; covert audio collection; comprehensive theory & knowledge of CCTV equipment, digital still cameras, terminology, etc |

You have to wonder about Steeler, as he seems the most ill-suited for Special Operations work or clandestine work other than this Covert Ops School, which we assume is "The Farm."
There must have been something Hawk saw in him. My take is that Hawk needed a risk taker. Since perhaps part of their mandate was the use of experimental equipment, he needed a guy like Steeler to manage that. Sort of the original BF 2000 with him, Breaker, Flash and Grand-Slam. I would guess it would be useful to send as many of the original Joes through Covert Ops schools just so they could come back and train the others, and all future members.

Recently watched Sicario and noted the fact that the end mission needed to have a cover of an FBI operation. Some of my favourite Joe stories were when they dealt with Cobra in the US and I didn’t realise as a kid that this sort of military action was prohibited.
Do you guys structure your Joe hierarchy to include some sort of FBI liaison or equivalent to help legitimise missions within the US? |

I almost never think of the Joes acting on US Soil, although I loved those cartoons and comics too. They just rolled out of Fort Wadsworth and found some CObras to shoot up. I think the inclusion of BUllet-Proof is enough to deputize Joes as needed, which I am not sure was the intention, but a nice bonus.
For me, Cobra's military might is never on display or used on US soil. It would never happen, except maybe once and then that would be the end of CObra USA.

Yeah, I don’t really think of them deploying an army or HISS tanks in the US, but I like the idea of cells or militia groups acting in Cobra interests, whether to steal secrets or attack specific targets. Rather than a full town of Springfield, I think a community a bit like Alexandria in The Walking Dead could work as a Cobra enclave.
In my joeverse, Cobra is the unseen force that props up the government in Val Verde and also causes instability in neighbouring Sierra Gordo. I also have Tomax and Xamot commanding a network of spies across the world, including the US. I do still have a spare Tommy Lee Jones head to use and may make his character from The Fugutive/US Marshals as some sort of liaison for the Joes conducting missions against Cobra on US soil. |

I think I view Cobra USA operations the same way you do. Small cells of CGs infiltrating various municipalities, School boards, Universities, Board of Directors, and even law enforcement agencies. While all the cat and mouse stuff that would ensue seems like awesome storytelling, in essence that just isn't what the Joes do in my Joeverse anymore.
You figure the Joes would be battling terrorists everywhere around the world and not just Cobra. However removing the heavy equipment Joes and paring it down to the more "Commando" types, then I see a sort of more "24" type team. Tracking down these various cells. However how did 24 deal with this as I think the Counter Terrorist Unit he was a part of was totally fictional too. I suppose this role would belong to the FBI HRT team. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostage_Rescue_Team But if this were your focus, and somehow a Joe team of military personnel were deputized to assist in such duties who would you bring in? or do you just have a new DEF team that deals with this? Obviously Snake-Eyes and Scarlett. Shockwave, Wide Scope, Bullhorn, Lowlight Beachhead? Law, Barricade, Long-Arm (Anyone else from C.O.P.S.?) You need a pit crew of Hackers: Sgt Hacker, Hi-Tech, Hard Drive Agent Faces, Mace, and Chuckles as the trade craft guys? Who leads the team then? Bullet-Proof or Sure-Fire?

Doesn't G.I. Joe answer directly to the president? Wouldn't that give them jurisdiction on U.S. soil?
