Just curious how DDP portrayed Zartan as I have never read a single DDP issue. My last Marvel issue was the one where Stalker, Outback, Quick Kick and Snow Job were in Borovia and got injured and/or captured. By then I was getting out of toys so I blanked out of Joes for 20 years until the 25th line.
My fanfic would see Buzzer getting replaced as VP and Ripper replaced by Road Pig and other such changes in management. SoA was very intriguing in that their club went through different phases of management. So the Dreadnoks will be a story within a story in my fanfic... that will probably never become finished. lol Oh and for the record I think Jax was turning into a putz the last couple of seasons. |

Ahh...good catch. So that would make the FLAK an anti-armor, anti-aircraft and indirect fire weapon.
I mentioned a few pages back about the Dreadnoks and how I am attempting to sort their leadership team (from watching Sons of Anarchy). Their top three would be the president, vice president and sergeant-at-arms. At first I figured Buzzer would be the prez, Ripper the VP and Torch the sergeant-at-arms. But then you throw Zartan into the equation. Is he actually part of the Dreadnoks or does he just ally with them? If he is an actual member of this motorcycle club then I would make him the prez, Buzzer the VP and Ripper the SaA. Just like in SoA I would make members come and go and internal power struggles happen in my Joe fanfic. For example Zarana and Zandar would later join and Zarana would be given the VP position and later Road Pig would be a perfect SaA (after his Prospect initiation that is). This would cause contention amongst other members such as Buzzer. So any fans of SoA out there? The Dreadnoks were another one of those fringe groups that I felt got a little too big. I realize these are toys and Hasbro had to keep new characters coming each year, but some of it just got over used. I keep my Dreadnok gang down to: Zartan Buzzer Ripper Torch Thrasher Monkey Wrench Zarana Zandar Road Pig. Zanzibar is like "pirate" ally to the Dreadnocks, but since the 'Noks are more like a motorcycle gang, I wouldn't make him a member. Jason |

All the original Noks were still there, and they added a few more named NoKs like Heartwrencher, but most were sort of unnamed thugs. In IDW, Zartan stole the identity of a previous Zartan I think, and I think they had Monkeywrench as a rival club leader, and they combined the two? Or was that DDP?

Somebody on this very site showed a video from Youtube where the Navy was operating a laser weapon that was exactly like the HAL in action (not form). That sucker took out a prop boat about a mile or so away (if I remember correctly). I wish I knew what those Navy operators MOS were. I suppose Grand Slam would have to have an equivalent rating. (Kind of cool that the HAL was before its time and is now a real world weapon.)
Also, Hama showed a little bit of Grand Slam's background in "G.I. JOE: Declassified." It's probably the same you were referring to. It's cool, but needs a "pew pew" soundtrack. I never saw Declassified. Maybe one day . . . |

I've always taken Zartan to be the leader of the Dreadnoks. I like that you have Buzzer 2nd and Ripper 3rd. I think I'll use that hierarchy.

Jason Zartan (Prez) Buzzer (VP) Ripper (Sergeant-at-Arms) Torch Monkeywrench Thrasher Then the rest will come and go throughout my fanfic. I do agree that Zanzibar should be more an ally versus an actual member. I was also debating whether to make Zarana a member or not. After watching SoA (and them basing their MC on the real-life Hells Angels) it makes me question why a high-testoserone club such as the Dreadnoks would allow women at their "table". Not trying to be sexist here but just basing it on what limited knowledge I know of motorcycle clubs. My backstory on her would either be she is part of the Dreadnoks (maybe she was Prez or VP of a different charter before transferring to the Springfield charter) or she is going to be an "old lady" of one of the 'Noks (and obviously Zartan's sister) but have a lot of influence in club matters (much like Gemma from SoA). Either way she and Buzzer will eventually come into conflict with one another. Quote:
In DDP Zartan grew the Dreadnoks into a multi franchise motorcycle club around the states. His Everglades gang got to at least 100 members I think.

I just can't take the Dreadnoks seriously in a realistic depiction of GI Joe. They'd be dead in about 90 seconds of a firefight with SOF operators. I despise them almost as much as frickin' Cobra-La.

Who knows. I think this is why Grand-Slam gets abandoned almost immediately after the first year. Still all these factors plus the Jetpack make him pretty versatile. Not sure how he got to man the HAL. I think it's more likely that the Joes were given a lot of cutting edge equipment and some surplus, and were expected to test them out. They probably took anything and everything. Let's say two companies competing for a new contract to replace the jeep. Hummer wins, Lamborghini loses, and Clutch gets a new ride. Same with the HAL. Except there is no one on the team who knows how to use it, but Grand-Slam is smart enough to figure it out. I wonder how big the Joe R&D team is? Jane, Grand-Slam, Hi-Tech, Kickstart?
One of my scenarios for the Joes is that they are kind of a "Delta who deals with experimental weaponry". Basically they are taking new weapons and vehicles and testing them in battle. However they would be more like Battle Force 2000 in that regard (instead of BF2000 being a small sub-unit within the Joe team). That's where I would never use the 'Noks...in a direct firefight. They would obviously lose. They are better suited as thugs who perform muscle in the town of Springfield whereas Cobra operatives do the actual combat in other countries as advisors and such. The 'Noks do their illegal activities and get the notice of the Joe's civilian section (people like Bullet-Proof, Bullhorn, etc). Personally I would rather have bikers (since there seems to be a ton in real life around the world) versus those damn ninja's that Hama keeps focusing his stories on. I've met lots of bikers (and a ton of them when I was in Sturgis back in '98, and yes there were a lot of guys from Australia there), however, I have never met a ninja in my life. |
