Speaking of Grand Slam....what kind of weapon is the HAL exactly? Grand Slam comes from the Artillery branch (which deals with indirect fire) but the HAL shoots a laser, which would be a direct fire weapon. We see this in the first Marvel issue when he takes out a few tanks. To further complicate matter the HAL comes with the range finder on it that shows the silhouette of an airplane in its crosshairs. So is it an anti-aircraft weapon then? That would make Grand Slam part of the Air Defense Artillery branch instead but his filecard clearly states he served in a 155mm battery (which would make his branch Artillery).

Who knows. I think this is why Grand-Slam gets abandoned almost immediately after the first year. Still all these factors plus the Jetpack make him pretty versatile. Not sure how he got to man the HAL. I think it's more likely that the Joes were given a lot of cutting edge equipment and some surplus, and were expected to test them out. They probably took anything and everything. Let's say two companies competing for a new contract to replace the jeep. Hummer wins, Lamborghini loses, and Clutch gets a new ride. Same with the HAL. Except there is no one on the team who knows how to use it, but Grand-Slam is smart enough to figure it out. I wonder how big the Joe R&D team is? Jane, Grand-Slam, Hi-Tech, Kickstart?

I think that the HAL is the laser equivalent of the FLAK, which is in turn an updated version of the famous Second World War German 88 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8.8_cm_Flak_18/36/37/41), which had anti-air and anti-tank roles. The only other system that I know of that fills both roles more recently is this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_De...ti-Tank_System
Certainly there are benefits to dual-role weapons, especially if that means your AD can push its bubble forward and contribute to the ground fight too, which is vaguely how the HAL seems to be used here: YOJOE.COM I actually think that Flash is a more appropriate HAL operator than Grand Slam. But since GL's the man, perhaps he started in tube artillery, showed an affinity for high tech stuff, and then he became a HAL operator after completing Special Weapons School and Advanced Tech School. I'll just assume that one is HAL school and the other is jet-pack school. On a related-ish note, any idea what the padding on his uniform (and Flash's) and is meant to be? It doesn't really make sense to be ballistic armor. It's in the wrong places to be heat shielding from jet pack burns. Thoughts? |

Purely aesthetics for the kiddies.
I remember thinking Flash was the coolest Joe when they first came out. But silver pads Grand Slam was like blue snaggletooth. I think the pads are for supposed radiation protection like when you get an x-ray

I think the HAL and the FLAK are supposed to be used for AD and artillery. Looking at that insert LowTech linked, the Whirlwind seems to be suggested for a support fire role, yet I always thought it was an AD weapon - even though the Z-Force version has a HISS, SORRY, Hyena in the targeting screen.
