It doesn't have to be an initial-for-initial acronym/abbreviation, I think. Just look at DEVGRU (which stands for United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group). In the new diagram I posted in my art thread, I have GI JOE stand for "Inter-Jurisdictional Operations Group - Echo" ... it isn't an exact mapping of the source initials, but it's close enough (the "Echo" is a nod to the comics... GI Joe was the codename of Special Counter-Terrorist Group-Delta, since I'm making a "next generation" take on the team, I thought it was only appropriate that I go to the next letter in the NATO phonetic alphabet).

In the movie Blackhawk Down, all the Delta guys wear similar helmuts. They're not the standard kevlar helmuts the Rangers wear, they look more like rock climbing helmuts. Earlier in the thread you guys were talking about how Delta's equipment is usually dictated by the mission. So why the different helmuts? I've never read the book, but maybe I should because I can't figure out what advantage those helmuts would have over the Rangers kevlar except maybe they're cooler and lighter. Is it that simple or am I overlooking something?

I wonder how common for guys to go back to Rangers after Special Forces? I know I read in the Kill bin Laden book I read the Command Sgt Major goes back to the Rangers after Delta. I have to double check if he was a Green Beret as well. |

Austin, Hollingsworth, or Sharpe. It would have to be a guy that was not a General I think. Like a Sharpe or Bullet-Proof would be good too, but I'd like them to have some military background. How about Trakker, as he is sort of an open book or even Jane. Are you talking about DHS guys running the Civilian portion?

DHS or DoJ
Jane would be heading up the Research/Labatory section.

Oliver, I think this is a perfect question to pose to Hama. Obviously he wants SE to remain a mystery, but asking if Stalker has any SF training would be useful to know. Why not ask him what the green beret deal was all about? Was this just a mistake on Hasbro's part? Was he supposed to have a black beret instead? Then we could put this to rest finally, although part of me still doesn't want to know becasuse I'd like to use him as SF.

Thanks for the list. Very helpful.
I see some of you guys are from Arlington. I don't think I've ever mentioned it, but my dad was at Fort Meyer when I was born in 1978. If you guys have ever gone down and watched the guards at the Jefferson Memorial, that's what my dad did before he got out of the army. He was in the the Big Red One at Fort Riley Kansas. He spent time in Germany doing war games to get ready to fight the Soviets. He liked the travel, but after he met my mom, he got into The Old Guard to avoid having to go over seas again. He drove a Colonel around Washington for a while and then ended up doing those ceremonies in the National Mall. I was born at Dewitt Army hospital in Fort Belvoir, which I believe is a bit south of you guys, but still pretty close. I need some clarification from you southern boys. I was born in Virginia, but I live in South Dakota. So technically am I considered a Southerner or a Yankee? I love SEC football and am a sucker for girls with southern accents (but really who isn't). I probably dont have the credentials to be either, so I'll have to settle for being a midwesterner.

I'm sure Duke may have been a Ranger, particularly if you try to make him current. But if he went Special Forces in 1969, the Rangers were reformed that same year, so he may have skipped it. Or done both but that's a lot of training.
I wonder how common for guys to go back to Rangers after Special Forces? I know I read in the Kill bin Laden book I read the Command Sgt Major goes back to the Rangers after Delta. I have to double check if he was a Green Beret as well. 60% of Special Forces soldiers are Ranger qualified. The way I see Duke - he's an Infantryman. He went to Ranger School, and was an excellent soldier. He went into Special Forces, but in the old days, Special Forces was the ELITE Infantry. The way I see Duke, he's just Old School Army. He's an old Infantry soldier - Ranger qualified - who joined the Green Berets because that's where the action was. I don't think he served in the Ranger Regiment. However, Hama had Duke working as a Ranger Instructor (with Roadblock) in "G.I. Joe Declassified". The Ranger School is technically part of the Ranger Regiment - 3rd Battalion, I believe. It's possible that Duke went back to Do a Tour as an Instructor at Ranger School. Lots of the best NCO's work as Instructors - and the RI's (Ranger Instructors) are some of the most elite, and respected reacters in the Army.

In Eric Haney's book, "Inside Delta Force", he tells that he was the youngest Command Sergeant Major in the Army. He said that he was serving in Delta when he got the promotion, but there wasn't a slot for a CSM in Delta at that time. So he went to Panama to work with the Infantry to finish out his career.
