Here are some quotes I gathered for further clarification of SOG and Ranger/LRRP relations.
Steve Sherman, a MACVSOG SF Historian, stated: "There were no Ranger units assigned to SOG; however, there were many members of SOG that were Ranger Qualified and assigned on an individual basis to SOG. Rangers (LRRPS) were assigned to 2nd and 3rd Mobile Strike Force Commands by 1FFV and IIFFV rspectively. There were no comparable assignments to MACVSOG. Ranger qualified SF personnel were often assigned to MACVSOG." Larry A. Greene, COL, SF (Retired) also stated: "There were many U.S. Army Rangers assigned to SOG. That is, there were many SOG operatives who were Ranger qualified and had been awarded a Ranger Tab as graduates of the U.S. Army Ranger School at Ft. Benning, GA. There were both officers and NCOs who were assigned to MACV-SOG who were Ranger School graduates. I graduated from Ranger School in Oct 1968 and know that several other officers and NCOs who were in my Ranger class (Ranger 4-69) had previously been in SOG and also some who were later in SF and SOG. You should understand that graduation from Ranger School did not necessarily mean assignment to a Ranger unit. Also, not all members of Ranger units are graduates of Ranger School. Many Infantry and other combat arms lieutenants as well as virtually all USMA graduates would graduate from Ranger School but would not necessarily be assigned to a Ranger unit. I also served as a MACV advisor in the 37th Vietnamese Ranger Bn. It was a requirement to have been awarded a Ranger Tab (Ranger School graduate) to serve as advisor to a VN Ranger unit. However, there were no (to my knowledge) Ranger units ever assigned to MACV-SOG. But there were many Ranger qualified officers and NCOs assigned to SOG." |

Here's a cut of the cover of Marvel's August issue #26 for reference.

I've also attempted to fill in some of the missing words as derived from the context. Here's what I got.

I've been going crazy trying to track down a transcript of the interview that had Hama's mention of Bob Light. It was an interview from 6 or 7 years ago, IIRC. It also had an early concept sketch drawn by Hama for the character that would eventually be developed into Snake-Eyes (it's basically the black commando Snake-Eyes v1 costume, but with no mask... instead, the head was that of a dark-haired moustache-ioed man wearing dark aviator glasses -- which is, by Hama's account, how Light looked like in 'Nam). Hama actually drew in Bob Light in issue #26 (or was it #27) of the original Marvel series... in the flashback sequence where Storm-Shadow carries Snake-Eyes to the waiting Huey, he drew in Bob Light as the grinning chopper pilot. Light also makes an appearance in issues #3 and #4 of the current GI Joe: Origins series and he's actually mentioned by name this time (with a strange Twilight Zone-style twist regarding the character being revealed in issue #8).

Light's the cowboy at the hotel "base" right? I haven't read #8 yet.
I knew there was something more going on with that guy.

Whoa dudes, check out what I just found on the web. I didn't think I would but I found the actual SOG ID document. I was pretty damn close to filling in all the missing words.

Yup, that's him. Now that I think about it, Hama never said if Light ever made it out of Vietnam. Maybe Snake-Eyes is his on-going tribute to his friend.
