Of course, none of that applies to this one - looking it up in the GCD, it looks like Larry did the breakdowns and Steve Leialoha did the finishes (Larry also penciled the issue). So this one you can blame on Larry.
Funny that Steve LEIALOHA did the finishes. I wonder if that's who Torpedo is named after.

Hama served in Vietnam as an EOD specialist according to his Wikipedia entry. It's the inspiration for the "Tunnel Rat" character.

Wouldn't surprise me at all - he's a well-known comics inker, and had worked with Larry before Torpedo came out (he did finishes on #21, among others).

Actually Larry was an EOD in Vietnam. Just like Tunnel Rat. I like your theory though for Snake-Eyes. I mean he may have gone back without Stalker and Storm Shadow for a tour or two? like 71 and 72? But MACVSOG was over by the fall of Siagon in 75? Maybe he Finished his tour left and then came back immediately since his family was dead. He could be wearing his uniform only because he was a proud soldier.
But when he returns he goes Special Forces. Do guys rotate back to Rangers after Special Forces? It seems like the Delta guys do according to Kill bin Laden. You can't do that job for too long. Maybe Stalker was Green Beret and then went back to the Rangers to train Rangers? |

Further (non-Wiki) reference: From his comicbookdb entry: Quote:
"... served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers from 1969 to 1971, during the Vietnam War..."
Quote:
"... After his military service, he began his professional career as a letterer, writer and background artist on among others 'Sally Forth' and 'Canon... "

EK: I don’t remember anyone ever dying in G.I. JOE until much later in the run. The books were filed with explosions and gun battles, but no one ever seemed to actually die. Your generation came of age with "The Lone Ranger" and the "Rifleman," and other heroes who were swift to act but compassionate toward human existence. Was that aggressive passivity, so inherent throughout early JOE, a result from your encounters with such characters in your youth, or did it stem from your exposure to Vietnam?
LARRY: It had more to do with what was acceptable in comics at that time, since most of the readers were kids. I wasn't very big on the Lone Ranger or the Rifleman. I was more into Yancy Derringer, Have Gun Will Travel, Honey West and T.H.E. Cat. Those shows and Carl Barks' Uncle Scrooge comics were the biggest influences. I don't know if it was the influences of my youth as much as my personal taste. I just didn't care for the unlikable anti-heroes who were all the vogue in comics. I thought a hero should have a moral and ethical center, and be pro-active about those beliefs. I never quite bought the rationale of vigilantes. I was raised by people who were put in concentration camps. Vigilantes, or caped crusaders or whatever you want to call them make me very nervous indeed. . I guess you ask, "Hey Larry do you know that MACVSOG was strickly Special Forces Green Berets? So on the cover of Issue #26? the real origins of Snake-Eyes, his MACVSOG tab is laying with the rest of his file? Unless he was Force Recon or a Navy SEAL he would have had to be a Green Beret. Is this true?"
PS does this make Stalker and Storm Shadow SF also? I'll take my no-prize now. |

We should just email Larry. Oh any character, he should have Snake-Eyes pretty ironed out. What should I ask him? Should I just ask about Snake-Eyes military qualifications?

As for the debate about whether or not Snake-Eyes served with MACV-SOG, many of the infantry/cavalry LRRP units were trained in the MACV-SOG run Recondo School in Nha Trang while not being ostensibly considered as Special Forces themselves (source: Eyes Behind the Lines: US Army Long-Range Reconnaissance and Surveillance Units by Major James F. Gebhardt (Retired), Combat Studies Institute Press, 2005).
That could be the extent of Snake-Eyes' MACV-SOG involvement and why the common notion is that he's a Ranger rather than an SF operator (I doubt the reliability of the SF mention in Wikipedia myself). I don't think an e-mail to Hama would be any more informative about that, though, judging by his previous replies. Last edited by zuludelta; 10-23-2009 at 01:09 PM.. |

Well, I sent him an email. We'll see what he says. I don't know of any better way to find the truth of the matter. Thanks for the correction on Larry's own service record. I didn't realize that.
