I know that Gung Ho is the only Joe that has a fake place of birth. Do not remember the name of the city but I do know that it is not real.

Fer de Lance, Louisiana.
Interestingly a Fer de Lance is a lance head snake. Could he be a Cobra double agent??? (getting back to an old discussion about possible traitors in the joe ranks) |

"Johhny on the Spot" eh, Oliver? Thanks for the compliment! As far as your theory is concerned, I'm not quite sure yet. I just got home from work so I'm processing. I think emailing Larry's the way to go. Problem is, things got mucked up when a real event was inserted into the storyline. If he'd kept the time of SE's service in 'Nam more vague, it would have been easier. But, by placing him and the others in the Tet offensive, that makes things much more complicated. I'll take your word for it on the uniform issue. It sounds like a great idea, though.

I don't know all of them, but there are quite a few Joes from fake places. We talked about this several hundred pages ago, but one Joe (Sorry, I can't recall who specifically) is from "Goblu, Michigan". That's not a real place, either.

Would it be impossible for SE to be pulled in and out on a per mission basis? That would help account for his classified documents as he'd go from classified mission to unclassified to classified to unclassified and so on until finally ending up on the LRRP unit with Stalker and Tommy.

It's Road-Pig. "Goblu, Michigan" is a play on words on "Go Blue!" -- a traditional sports chant used by students of the University of Michigan.

Maybe he was SF and they inserted in with the LRRP team for a reason?
I think the response we'd get from Larry is that he doesn't quite know. Remember, this is the guy that pretty much made up everything on the fly depending on what was needed for the story. I think he just put in real time at various points of SE's history just to give it a setting (especially with the Baroness/Destro stuff, which looking back, makes SE quite a bit older then them, lol).

Good catch, my friend. However, even if the events with the Baroness' Brother and Destro took place prior to his LRRP missions, Do you think it's still possible to read the story as though Snake-Eyes went back to 'Nam after he came home and found his family had been killed? Because that's the only way I can figure out how Snake-Eyes would have had the opportunity to go to Special Forces.

I almost wonder if Larry Hama and the boys at Marvel were just like, "Yeah, MACV-SOG sounds awesome. Write that on the cover. It's all secretive and covert. Let's just put that on the cover." It wouldn't be the first time that the cover of a comic book didn't really relate to the details of the story inside the comic.

Covers are _almost_ always assigned by editors. They're also often done by an artist who isn't doing the interiors (look at all the Mike Zeck covers from GI Joe), and the artist may or may not have access to the script for the issue, or the editor asks for a specific image or idea. They may want the artist to submit several rough sketch ideas for the cover as well. Some writers insist on control of what goes on the cover of their comics, but that's pretty rare from what I understand. Some covers are done ahead of time as "stock" or "inventory" covers, and dragged out when they need a cover for an issue. (Marvel in particular adopted this policy deliberately around the time the Ultimate universe started, which is why so many of the covers from that time period didn't showcase what was going on inside at all) Of course, none of that applies to this one - looking it up in the GCD, it looks like Larry did the breakdowns and Steve Leialoha did the finishes (Larry also penciled the issue). So this one you can blame on Larry.
