I am loving the custom work guys. I'm especially jealous of Oliver's Magnum. Very nice work everybody, I wish my customs looked half as good. I've attempted a few now and my glaring weakness is painting. My kingdom for just a little artistic talent with a paint brush!

Okay, here's an idea I've been kicking around regarding Cobra's origins and I must admit is heavily influenced by the Chimaera character in the IDW Joe comics.
For those who don't read the comics, Chimaera is a character introduced in the Origins series who may or may not be the future CC and may or may not be a Covert Intel operative who may or may not be working for the US govt. All he claims is that his orders come down from alot higher than a general. Thus; In my joeverse, CC still has the same origin, car salesman, dissillusioned with govt, banks, bureaucracy etc, older brother dies in car crash ..etc. Only, this is all a cover story. He was really a covert operative for the govt (which explains his military and strategic skills). A clandestine arm of the govt looks at the current strategic landscape a few years ago. Realizing that wars will no longer be fought symmetrically as it was in the past due to the rise of terrorism across the globe. Also well aware of clandestine anti govt militias springing up in their own backyard, they come to the conclusion that terrorism will eventually come direct to their door step. The govt institutes Operationraw Venom. A top level NSA operator is tasked with creating a front organization that will literally draw elements that are or have the potential to cause problems in the future. This operator firstly infiltrates and gains control over a local militia group called 'First Strike'. Now with a small cadre of operators he begins 'drawing' all these elements to him; arms dealers, mercenaries, arsonists, outlaw biker gangs (Dreadnoks), anarchists, criminals and insurgents (Baroness and Firefly). At the same time, he makes contacts with terrorist groups and like minded individuals across the globe. The idea is to get all these guys together and take them out all at once. Problem is, the operator who adopts the name Cobra Commander begins to flourish with all this power and influence and decides to go into business for himself, getting his superiors and all those who knew about the op silenced. so Cobra starts as a govt black bag operation that goes wrong. I just haven't worked out how Snake eyes and the Hard Master's death fits into this new idea....yet. Last edited by thegame68; 10-22-2009 at 01:33 AM.. |

Also, I would have to agree about CC having a military background of some kind. I think the reason Cobra has risen above all of the other dog and pony show terrorist organizations is because the common soldier in Cobra WANTS to fight for CC. It has to be about more than money. Sure Cobra has it's share of standard mercenary types, but the fanatically loyal, like the Crimson Guard and some of the higher classes of Vipers, probably believe that the world would be a better place with CC in charge. They feel like CC is one of them and if he were running things, they'd finally get the fair chance that they have been denied for so long.
In Albert Speer's book Inside the Third Reich, Speer talks about how Hitler never trusted his generals, but was always right at home when he visited his infantry. Reading that book, I got the impression that Hitler's commanders followed his orders because if they didn't he could imprison or execute them. Hitler's soldiers followed his orders because they loved him, or at least loved what they were allowed to know about him. Hitler was a very effective speaker and could inspire things in his audience, especially young people. That is exactly how I picture CC. Just like Hitler, CC's message is attractive to those who feel slighted by the system and think the he offers something better. But just like Hitler, when you reach CC's inner circle and can peak behind the curtain, then you realize just how empty his message is and that he is in it for himself. |

That is awesome thegame68. I like the way you've fleshed out the Colton-Kennedy story. Nice
And if I haven't said it before, welcome to the thread I can't wait to hear more of your ideas. I agree with the parallels between CC and Hitler. One problem for me was the identity crisis of Cobra. Were they criminals?, terrorrists? etc. That's one of the reasons why I love this thread and enjoy reading about other's ideas because I think we all try to flesh things out, fill in gaps in the story and especially the whole 'what drives or motivates these people'. Why do people join Cobra? what do they get out of it?, what happens when they leave? is there an ex Cobra support group? when they leave do they need to be deprogrammed? Again, thanks everyone for making this thread a reason to log on in the morning |

Sorry to drag us back, but I want to make sure I didn't misunderstand this. Does this document indicate that Snake Eyes was a Ranger who worked for MACV-SOG as a Special Forces recon man or does this indicate he was in fact a Green Beret?

Yeah, I don't have it right in front of me but in #39, the mission to Sierra Gordo to rescue Dr. Burkhart, the two Russian mercs make reference to other special ops teams. One of them says that the assaulters must have been Americans because others would have killed everyone or they would have come and gone without being noticed. I'll try to dig it out later to find the exact quote. And of course, in #57, Flint and Lady Jaye are working with the SAS.

Oliver, is your O-ring collection complete yet? You have amassed a nice collection, especially of the rare, hard-to-find Tiger Force International figures along with your ghost squad. I just saw the ghost Tracker figure sell on ebay for a pretty penny. Seriously, who are you missing? You must at least have most if not all of the rare European ones. How about the UK Mutt and Spirit? Those would make nice Night Force attachments.
That PeterDB.net site had some good info on the figures that never were but he needs to update his list and include the Tiger Force Beach Head, Hardtop, Mutt and Tomahawk (Zartan in disguise), which I use as my Tiger Force CO. I also include Claymore (because of the obvious uniform colors) and BC Leatherneck (see YOJOE.COM | Leatherneck) There are a lot of International figures from Brazil and Action Force that I don't own. I do own a lot of custom O-Ring figures made by Shakka85. He's a good friend. And I've kit bashed a few key characters in O-Ring form. You're right about PeterDB.net's need to update his site, but I do think the history on Tiger Force that it provides is pretty clutch. Lots of interesting stuff there. I had not thought of using BC Leatherneck with Tiger Force, but that's a great idea. I also use original Claymore with Tiger Force, and I have a Chinese version of Tiger Force Flint, which is a Falcon head with a v2 Dusty body painted like Tiger Force Flint - so he's my Tiger Force Falcon. I also use those convention figures - and the Tiger Force Tomahawk is pretty awesome. Great figure - and it's fun to have a Sub-Team version of Hawk. I imagine the General gets excited to put on his Tiger Force uniform and go down and check in with the guys in Sierra Gordo.

I do own it, and I think it's a cool sub-team. It's funny, but Yojoe.com does not recognize it as an official sub-team. For me, it's a little tough to use because Short Fuse, Mirage, and Stalker are all primarily assigned to other sub-teams... Short Fuse is one Night Force, Mirage is with the Marines on board the Flagg, and Stalker leads the Desert Patrol Squad. So, I sort of developed my own Arctic base chain-of-command. Sub-Zero is the Officer in Charge, Blizzard is the First Sergeant and most of the other cold weather Joes just work out of that base of operations.

Oliver, I gotta tell you. I am now the proud owner of a Claymore fig and now I see why you like him so much. I always thought he was a cool fig but one that I refused to pay eBay prices for.
A few months ago I got a figure lot which had a weird Iron Grenadier with Claymore arm and waist. Over the last few months, when I was bored I'd just look for body parts on eBay and now after 7 months I have a complete Claymore and he is pretty cool. Glad I have him, now I want a 25th for my wall I use 25th as Display only unless it's a new character or iteration. |
