I'll agree with Lister. I think he developed the language skills in the military.
YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Stalker I'm sure we can make up a list of buddies he had in Detroit that were say, immigrant children, who gravitated to his Gangs. I like Zulus theory that it was popular for African Americans of the 70s to explore their roots through language study. Swahili in particular. But almost every African I've met speaks French, and I think Detriot has a large Iraqi community as well. Spanish well that's almost a second language these days. Still going back to the Timeline, I also like my Stalker and Snake-Eyes to be in country say 72-75. I think they did a bulk of their activities in Laos and Combodia. These were truly the most secret of activities the US was involved in. The CIA in particular. I know this confuses the Tet offensive time placement, but really what does that add to their characters? It really was about Jan and Feb 68. I suppose there would have been beaucoup LRRP patrols looking for VC, but those LRRP patrols in Laos and Cambodia always sounded more off the books. Though it's true that the TET Offensive doesn't add or detract a great deal from the character, I think it was an important time to Hama. It was one of the bloodiest moments of the war and military action ceased early in '73 and MACV was disbanded then and bombings halted later in August of that year. So moving the characters around a few years doesn't do a whole lot, but I just prefer to have them there during the late 60s when a lot of interesting operations occurred. I'd also like to tie them in with some key historical events. Perhaps the Green Beret Affair, or a fictitous counterpart involving Snake Eyes. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 10-16-2009 at 12:50 PM.. |

Yeah your right. Just being there had the height of the war makes their service that more meaningful. You figure after 1970 there must have been less volunteers for Vietnam. Don't quote me on that I haven't tried to find out if that is in fact true.

In one of those flashbacks to Vietnam, where Stalker,Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow were together, they were talking about writing letters home. Actually giving Stalker ideas for writing a letter home. Stalker did not want to write home about what was happening around him. He thought it would be better to write about hiking around Germany. He may or may not have had a younger brother, who was thinking about enlisting to come to Vietnam. But while Stalker was in Vietnam his brother wouldn`t be allowed to join. I also could be mistaken

I can't lay my hands on my copy of issue 26 right now, but on the cover is a doccument regarding Snake Eyes that I believe is from MACVSOG. It details how he is supposed to treated by other soldiers if they encounter him. His files were "supposedly" destroyed in the infamous fire at Ft. Leonard Wood. BCross, the issue you're referring to is 155 and you're pretty much correct in the details. Also, Loose, I know you were talking about reading up on different soldiers' POV during 'Nam. A couple books I can recommend on medics are "Combat Medic-Vietnam" by Craig Roberts (I believe) and "Doc:Platoon Medic". Both are good accounts of what medics did on a daily basis over there. Hope this helps!

Actually that was me, but thanks, I'll check out those books when I get the chance. You know, it's funny you point that out about the document on the cover of issue 26. I never paid much attention to the cover photo until I started looking closely for details about their Nam tours and then I discovered that little easter egg about two weeks ago. So yes, according to that document, SE was in MACV-SOG, which means he was a SF recon man.

IIRC, draftees served a maximum of three tours. Don't know if there was a strict hard cap for volunteers back then... I imagine anybody wanting to stay in country in a combat capacity for more than five tours, especially on their first four-year enlistment (like Snake-Eyes was), would have sent up red flags with the Army shrinks (not to mention that squeezing in five tours in four years is unlikely... not impossible, but so unlikely as to be improbable). Hama makes no mention of Snake-Eyes re-upping during the course of the war, so we know he only served out his first term.

There's also Armadillo and Altitude (the Sky Patrol version). And depending on how you define "native" American, Torpedo and Red Dog would qualify as well, being of indigenous ancestry in non-CONUS United States jurisdictions (Hawaii and American Samoa, respectively).

The New Convention figure Sgt. Redmack is a U.S. Native American.
