IIRC, draftees served a maximum of three tours. Don't know if there was a strict hard cap for volunteers back then... I imagine anybody wanting to stay in country in a combat capacity for more than five tours, especially on their first four-year enlistment (like Snake-Eyes was), would have sent up red flags with the Army shrinks (not to mention that squeezing in five tours in four years is unlikely... not impossible, but so unlikely as to be improbable). Hama makes no mention of Snake-Eyes re-upping during the course of the war, so we know he only served out his first term.

Yeah, the comic says he was "released" and when he got home people spit on him and eventually he joins up with Cobra.
Edit: In fact it was issue 43. Wade says, "And then one morning it was over. The war had ended and we were free. I was going home." So I'm assuming he was released. |

By todays standards,Snake Eyes would be a veteran and be in his 60s. Joe Colton would be nearly 70. In fact a lot of the Joes would be in the mid 50s to ealy 60s.

Alas, Hama just didn't invest much effort in the backstory that we all might have liked to have seen. Shame, cause it could have added some true depth to the characters.

No doubt. DDP kind of poked fun at this fact when GI Joe was reactivated and some Joes were out of shape and overweight and fairly wrinkled.

Yeah how's your Vietnam project coming out Tanksmasher? What about the rest of the Vietnam vets?
I always figure SE was 19yrs old in 68, but he's out by 71. Then Ninja Training for a while, maybe 4 or 5 years. If you take Declassified, then he's mulling around the states playing Robin Hood for a year before Storm Shadow finds him. Then maybe hanging around the States for a Year in the High Sierras after Ninja Training until Stalker and Hawk find him. Still What makes him such a badass to Stalker? It's not like Stalker would know about the Ninja Training? So why would he look to Snake-Eyes? Maybe he asked Storm Shadow first and he refuses? Still I take the Creation of the team at around 79. That way Stalker can say he saw the Tattoo more than Ten years ago. I figure what sets Snake-Eyes apart from other soldiers is that he can take a lickin and keep on ticking. He probably has more bullet holes than anyone. He's like a Bruce Willis Movie, unbelievable amount of puniishment, and still manages to kick the crap out of the bad-guys. only now with Ninja training. I also imagine that SE had a love for martial arts before he meets Storm Shadow. and maybe he and Scarlett catch each other's eye back in their middle School days at like tournaments or something? |

This is what I'm currently trying to explain in my Vietnam story. Colton's file card just says "ultimate fighting force," which implies GI Joe but doesn't necessarily mean it has to be the GI Joe that Hawk and Flagg command. It could be SOG that Colton helps create and then branches off on his own to establish GI Joe's predecessor unit, known entirely under a different name.
It's interesting how Hama trid to set the creation of Hawk's GI Joe around the late 70s when Delta Force was created to imply that GI Joe might be Delta but I think Delta should be a smaller, independent unit, from which GI Joe recruits some of its members. I think that GI Joe should fall under SAD. Sort of like the third division, equivalent to SOG and SAD's Political Action Group. Colonel Beckwith talked about his basis for Delta Force being "Project Delta" which was a special unit of Green Berets he put together. It was a sort of precursor to Delta - I imagine there may have been a similar situation with Colton and the later Joe Team. It may have been a clandestine precursor to the later Joe Team started by Flagg. What would be interesting is if other members of Colton's team showed up to help the modern Joes.

I also imagine that SE had a love for martial arts before he meets Storm Shadow. and maybe he and Scarlett catch each other's eye back in their middle School days at like tournaments or something? I think that most candidates would be sought out because someone spoke highly of them, so if say Stalker is the first member he might recommend Snake Eyes and other exceptional soldiers he served with and then those recruits would make further recommendations. Of course, referrals don't get you in the unit--you still have to pass mustard and qualify--but it's the first step. So I'm trying to expand my knowledge of the various fighting elements of the war. Most books do a good job of describing the infantryman's life but I want to illustrate what it was like to be a medic, an army sniper vs a marine sniper, a platoon leader, a platoon sgt, a LRRP, a SOG recon man, a riverine patrolman, a combat tracker, a mortarman, a mechanized grunt, a "Slick" pilot, a FAC and an F-4 jockey. Joes like Gung-Ho and Torpedo and Stalker will meet each other in Recondo school, where SEALS and Marines and LRRPs often attended together and even went on a mission. Wild Bill will be a familiar face of course. Keel-Haul will be there as an F-4 pilot. Spirit will be an Army sniper/designated marksman. Claymore will fight with SOG as will other Joes. Shipwreck will serve on a PBR. We'll see how Duke rises through the ranks. And some Joes like Steeler and Doc will serve as enlisted men before going on to become officers. I'm staying as close to as much of the comic/filecard background material as I can while filling in gaps here and there and trying to make everything plausible. It'sfun trying to piece it all together. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 10-16-2009 at 12:02 AM.. |

Tyroc that is a pretty cool/ fantastic/ Brilliant Idea. It always bothered me that Cobra Commander never had a military background that we know of. I wonder if Chimera is in fact Cobra Commander? I guess we'll see. He hasn't shown up in any of the series yet.
I suppose you could change the Ninja aspect of the story. For example why does the Hard Master have to die? Lets say Snake-Eyes goes off the deep end a little, which is what Storm Shadow picks up on. He brings him to the clan and they train him up. The loss of his family renders him devoid of most emotional sentiments, and thus he excels at his training. Eventually Snake-Eyes snaps out of it and goes back to the Military ending up in GIJOE or he may go government agent Route. He's part of the initial Draw Venom plan. Which is why CC wants him dead. Since he left and is now a Joe. In my verse Storm Shadow is not a nice guy. He's a ninja, and has no problem killing women, or Children, kidnappings or whatever. Cobra Hires the Arishikage ninja clan frequently. Hard Master just send Storm Shadow to handle the huge contract and the myriad of tasks CC wants the red Ninjas to do. How's that? I'm also stealing it! |
