I agree about the fighter wing. I know Hasbro produced heavier Cobra equipment for the Joes to fight against, but in the real world, you'd think Cobra would be better off going with a slimmed down, secret organization rather than a large para military outfit. If Cobra's mainly in the business of assassinations, taking hostages, and various extortion plots they'd be better off not using huge numbers of Night Ravens and MAGGOTs. So the Joes wouldn't need heavy equipment most of the time. During those rare times when Cobra invades a country, then I could definately see the Joes needing artillery, tanks, and fighter jets. And when that happens they could just use the existing US military equipment that is stationed all over the world at US bases. The Joes don't need to worry about staff to maintain it or moving it all over the globe quickly enough. I think Troynos suggested it and I'm going to use it too. Those times when they need fighter jets, artillery, or large numbers of tanks my Joes will just call on whatever US forces or allied forces may be in the closest proximity to the battlefield. That may cause some sticky political situations, but it seems like the best solution.
Cobra definitely has a bit of an identity crisis necessitated by the changing marketting whims of Hasbro. Are they terrorists? drug runners / criminals? world power? paramilitary / militia? evil for the sake of evil? Is Cobra Commander, a commander of a paramilitary force, a head of state (as the imperial procession and the idea of Serpentor as a monarch seems to imply). Oy |

Okay, here's an idea I've been kicking around regarding Cobra's origins and I must admit is heavily influenced by the Chimaera character in the IDW Joe comics.
For those who don't read the comics, Chimaera is a character introduced in the Origins series who may or may not be the future CC and may or may not be a Covert Intel operative who may or may not be working for the US govt. All he claims is that his orders come down from alot higher than a general. Thus; In my joeverse, CC still has the same origin, car salesman, dissillusioned with govt, banks, bureaucracy etc, older brother dies in car crash ..etc. Only, this is all a cover story. He was really a covert operative for the govt (which explains his military and strategic skills). A clandestine arm of the govt looks at the current strategic landscape a few years ago. Realizing that wars will no longer be fought symmetrically as it was in the past due to the rise of terrorism across the globe. Also well aware of clandestine anti govt militias springing up in their own backyard, they come to the conclusion that terrorism will eventually come direct to their door step. The govt institutes Operationraw Venom. A top level NSA operator is tasked with creating a front organization that will literally draw elements that are or have the potential to cause problems in the future. This operator firstly infiltrates and gains control over a local militia group called 'First Strike'. Now with a small cadre of operators he begins 'drawing' all these elements to him; arms dealers, mercenaries, arsonists, outlaw biker gangs (Dreadnoks), anarchists, criminals and insurgents (Baroness and Firefly). At the same time, he makes contacts with terrorist groups and like minded individuals across the globe. The idea is to get all these guys together and take them out all at once. Problem is, the operator who adopts the name Cobra Commander begins to flourish with all this power and influence and decides to go into business for himself, getting his superiors and all those who knew about the op silenced. so Cobra starts as a govt black bag operation that goes wrong. I just haven't worked out how Snake eyes and the Hard Master's death fits into this new idea....yet. |

Random and from many pages back - I wasn't crazy, I did read that there's a tie between Sandstorm and Zartan.

# RAM w/ Sandstorm; Hell yeah. I love the RAM, and seeing it in desert paint scheme is pretty cool, but again, it’s all about the figure. He looks like your basic Reactive Armor Joe with the Resolute Duke helmet and some desert camouflage pants, but I think the look is still great. The fact that the Pursuit of Cobra Zartan supposedly comes with a Sandstorm costume only furthers the “legacy” of this new character as well.

Tyroc that is a pretty cool/ fantastic/ Brilliant Idea. It always bothered me that Cobra Commander never had a military background that we know of. I wonder if Chimera is in fact Cobra Commander? I guess we'll see. He hasn't shown up in any of the series yet.
I suppose you could change the Ninja aspect of the story. For example why does the Hard Master have to die? Lets say Snake-Eyes goes off the deep end a little, which is what Storm Shadow picks up on. He brings him to the clan and they train him up. The loss of his family renders him devoid of most emotional sentiments, and thus he excels at his training. Eventually Snake-Eyes snaps out of it and goes back to the Military ending up in GIJOE or he may go government agent Route. He's part of the initial Draw Venom plan. Which is why CC wants him dead. Since he left and is now a Joe. In my verse Storm Shadow is not a nice guy. He's a ninja, and has no problem killing women, or Children, kidnappings or whatever. Cobra Hires the Arishikage ninja clan frequently. Hard Master just send Storm Shadow to handle the huge contract and the myriad of tasks CC wants the red Ninjas to do. How's that? |

Here's something I've been toying with. I incorporate so many Generals into my Joe verse that it seems odd for what I have of about 200 characters to have 10 generals.
What if the Joes who are Generals were in fact the Jugglers now? So they would have full reign as to what they want to do. So Colton, Austin, Keel-Haul, Hollingsworth, Flagg Sr.(Never Died), and Hawk. Maybe a couple of CIA Directors as well. Then there is Flagg III, Rey, and Payload as well but they don't sit on that inner circle. I have a Patton Figure I incorporate as well sometimes, but he doesn't need to be part of this discussion. Basically when Cobra Figures out Serpentor, The Government say why not bring back Patton? |

All cool ideas.
I agree, CC not having any military background was always odd. Why would Major Bludd and Destro agree to follow a straight up used car salesman? CC wouldn't be able to do any kind of planning, he'd always have to rely on others. Having him be an ex-government operative makes alot of sense.
