I imagine it's a service thing more than anything. But I believe the last director of SAD was a former Recon Marine so I imagine he was sort of biased. If the next guy comes around is a former Green Beret I would imagine he has better connections to guys at Ft Bragg and can actively recruit from there. I'm sure they look for those guys who are ready to leave the service or guys who have participated in Missions for the Agency.
Although I think there has been the tendency to recruit the Force Recon guys as much as the SEALs or the Green Berets. But based on this list of past directors of the DO (now the National Clandestine Services), which SAD falls under we got a lot of Marines. Especially recently: Director of the National Clandestine Service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Michael Sulick Stephen Kappes Jack G. Downing Hugh Price Pretty much every other one for the last 20 years. |

It sort of makes sense if most of the past directors of the NCS are former Marines. For the longest time, before the formation of MARSOC, the only "official" SOF-type Marines were the ones attached as individual augmentees to the SEAL teams. Maybe they liked what they saw working with them. Last edited by zuludelta; 09-21-2009 at 11:24 PM.. |

Yeah I guess we'll never know. But I bet you are right Zulu.
I think they would be better served if they were actually be Green Berets due to the Language qualifications. But I've heard there is a large number of Marines, not all of who were Force Recon. but SAD is only like 1000 individuals? half of that is support staff. I know in that last book I read: First In: An Insiders Account of how the CIA Spearheaded the War on Terror in Afghanistan by Gary Schroen, 2005 The SAD director "Rod" is a former Marine and that was 2001? so not sure if he is still the guy. |

There you are Troy. Gotta pay the bills!
I just picked up like 10 Special Missions Issues that I never read. So much better than what was out at the time. It reminds me of the orignal few years. Tell you what Outback gets a lot of play. |

Glad you're back, Troynos. How's work going?
You know, it strikes me a funny - all these Top Secret Units we talk about... I wonder how many units exist that we don't know about. Thanks to you guys, I just heard about the 24th STS. I wonder how many other units there are that we don't know about. Does the NSA have a unit? Do the Marines actually have a unit we don't know about?

So I was reading through my newly acquired collection of Special Mission Comics and I finished reading #18 and there on the last page is this:
http://yojoe.com/archive/mailin/steelbrigade.shtml The Steel Brigade mail-in offer. I sent mine in a long time ago so I forgot about it, but there is the perfect formula. You check off a couple boxes and boom! Here's a finished product: YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Steel Brigade Only thing missing is Birthplace and Rank and Filename. Yet they have the formula; Traits, Ability, Personality. I mean did they get this from Hama? It's around the time he stopped writing them. Last edited by Loose Cannon; 09-23-2009 at 09:50 AM.. |

That's a great question. I wonder if Hama helped them figure this system out, or if Hasbro was simply trying to follow Hama's work? All in all, it's a really good way to do it, especially considering they were trying to offer this opportunity to kids all over America.
