Definitely the Army. Sort of makes sense if Hama's initial blueprint for the team was Delta Force (and seeing as how Hama was an Army combat engineer/EOD specialist himself, it's not too much of a stretch to imagine that he would harbour an unconscious pro-Army bias when it comes to filling out the team's roster).

You bring up a good point Oliver about The breed of bad guys that US SWAT units take on can be less than spectacular.
But like you said Zulu, we don't really have that GSG-9 paramilitary, Gendarmerie that most other countries use. I guess the need has not arisen yet. I suppose the UK uses SAS guys for hostage rescues internally so I suppose the US would use Delta-Force. But if we go to another country then we may be using DEVGRU or Delta, as they would fall under CIA guidance.

I just noticed something while organizing my filecard project: Airwave (from the Sky Patrol) and Colonel Courage (from Battle Corps) have the same filename, Cliff V. Mewett.
And no, they're not the same person (Airwave is white guy born in Kentucky, Courage is a black dude from Boston). |

Cliff V. Mewett? Well, you can't blame them, there's probably a "Cliff V. Mewett" in every town in America. Oh wait, no. No there isn't. That's pretty ridiculous.

SO what do y'all know about the USAF 24th STS? If they're like Delta or DEVGRU, I have 2 questions: 1. Why do we need another unit like this? 2. When are the Marines going to develop a unit like this?

I don't know much about the 24th STS. and I'm surprised the Marines haven't done so already, but I guess the Marines were slow to jump on board with USSOCOM and they don't like to share, especially since they were doing CQB training already. Maybe they figure the SEALs DEVGRU are doing it and they sort of support them to some affect.
Although now saying that, the way MARSOC is set up now Who knows? Those Marines in MARSOC who make up a MSOT (Marine Special Operations Team) seem to be mimicking the Green Berets. So they may be working their way up to Delta Force style operations. If the Marines were to do something similar I suspect they would fall under USSOCOM and into the JSOF with Delta and DEVGRU and 24th STS. And now for some 24th STS research. |

No question about GSG-9. Those guys are awesome. But I watch "Dallas SWAT" and those guys versus Delta? I'm going with Delta. Certainly there is a lot to be said for experience. However, the quality of equipment, training has to be taken into account. Also the "quality" of the bad guys has to be factored in. Drugged out Thugs to whom the SWAT team is serving a warrant are not going to provide the same level of resistance as an Al-Aqaeda cell in the Mountains of Afghanistan. I see where you're going, but doubt average Al- Aqaeda terrorist is much better trained in combat than a mid-level gang banger. Don't forget what drugged out oppostion did to Delta and the Rangers in Somalia. Also, I think there has to be some allowance for the quality of personnel. SWAT guys are good cops, but would those guys pass Delta Selection? Remember that Selection has less to do with fighting and more about proving you're not a quitter. I think similar individuals gravitate to both groups. Probably very few if any would make it past selection and graduate from training. I think it's more likely for teams like LAPD and Miami-Metro Dade than teams from Mayberry.
Any SWAT Team from any PD in America versus Delta Force? My money's on Delta Force. Of course in most field exercises Delta has a decided edge. But if you were to run both teams through a kill house, I don't think LAPD SWAT would be to far behind. The FBI's HRT may give them a run for their money, but it was Delta who helped start and train that unit.

That's teams of PJs, CCTs and I believe Combat Weatherman that I mentioned in the earlier discussion. You may want to check the books "No Room for Error" by Col. John T. Carney Jr. and "U.S. Air Force Special Ops" by Fred Pushies. Not at Delta/DEVGRU level, but they hold their own. Now that the Marines are in SOCOM, it seems like the trying to dupicate the capabilities of all the other services. Had their own USMC "SEALs". Workin on the MARPAT "Berets". It won't be long before a Gunnery Sgt. is leading a team of USMC "PJs" on a CSAR mission.
