There was definitely a lack of officers on the Joe team, especially in the early years. Usually they were pilots like Ace or Slipstream or other vehicle drivers like Steeler or Cutter. That's one of the reasons I always liked Falcon. He seemed like a great well-rounded soldier like Duke and Flint but he was higher in the chain of command. I know we've talked about a couple times before, but I always envisioned Falcon as a guy being groomed to lead the team someday. I pictured him and Beachhead filling the Hawk and Duke roles at some point.

Yeah, the movie got it right making Duke a Major and Ripcord the Top Sarge.
Yeah, we all kind of lost the enthusiasm for asking Hama questions when he came out and said "I winged it". Which, well not being a bad thing, was kind of disappointing. I think we all had hoped he put as much thought into it as we have. But gotta give the man props, for having winged it, it's sure lasted awhile and prompted alot of good discussions. Yeah, Hama never liked Duke. He said in an interview about the IDW series that he was looking forward to the chance of redoing Hawk and Duke and making them more then just 2-Dimensional. You could tell in the Marvel series that he liked Flint better, Flint got more "screen" time then Duke and was a more well-rounded character. DDP tried to combine comic and cartoon, that's why we had increased presence of Shipwreck and Duke. But Duke was never meant to be the overall leader, or XO, he's the field leader. But then Hasbro went and made guys that would outrank Duke in the field. I understand what they were going for with making Duke the First Sargeant, but if they wanted him to remain the field leader he should have been a Captain or Major and could have still been the same type of character. Stalker, Gung-Ho and Beachhead make better First Sgt then Duke.

So Hama wrote the comic book but Hasbro or Marvel dictated what or who was in charge or had a dominate role?
Is that correct? When they started killing Joes was that Hama, Marvel or Hasbro? |

I'm not sure it was so cut and dried, but the fact was, if Hasbro wanted to promote a particular action figure, i think Hama was pretty much expected to feature the character somewhat prominently.

Yeah pretty much. Hasbro says we are making new figures and you need to put them in the comic.
I think though Duke as a team leader was fine. As in He gets a team and say Stalker gets a team and maybe Gung-Ho or Torpedo gets a team. They seem to be sort of doing this with the IDW series, except I'm totally confused with Ranks already. Issue 0 has Duke's team with Flint and Torpedo on it who would both outrank him. |

As I understand it, Hasbro gave the okay to get rid of characters who hadn't had figures in a while, and Hama killed them.

Exactly. Since the cartoon and comic were based on the toys, it was the toy sales that ultimately carried the most weight. It seemed like Hasbro, Hama, Marvel, and Sunbow worked together pretty well, but I have a feeling that, at the end of the day, it was what Hasbro says, goes.

Which is why you got:
1 - The O13 promotions. Most of the O13 had "replacements" in new figures that were coming out. Hasbro wouldn't want Rock 'n Roll featured if they had a new machine gunner figure in Repeater (for example) 2 - New Joes and vehicles that would make "one and done" appearances. It seemed every couple of issues there would be a new Joe that would appear and then never be heard from again. Stretcher and the Raider Vehicle are prime examples. They showed up in an issue, had a "starring" role in that issue and then weren't seen again. Backstop and the Persuader are the same. So Hasbro would say "showcase these figures and vehicles" and Hama would do his best to provide good stories and advertisments at the same time. Skidmark and the Desert Fox. Probably the biggest example is the Star-Viper story where he sneaks into the PIT. First appearance of Skidmark, Windmill and Wildcard and the Desert Fox and Mean Dog. Both vehicles and Windmills helicopter all came out the same year. Aside from that one appearance, never see Windmill again and never see his helicopter.

What a shame......... I think if I recall that is why I stopped reading the comics. They became very random and all over the place as far as characters and pacing.
What I hate even more than the ranks in the filecards is the character art at times. It seems that characters such as Hawk went from being a blonde to brown hair. Some Joes hair color changed and others had facial hair added or removed at a whim. |
