His original filecard states that he's an expert in the use of the balisong (the Philippine "butterfly" knife).

So was the comic version of Lifeline against violence like the cartoon version? I don't remember much about him being in the comics, if I didn't really like his figure I probaly would have never cared for his character.

The problem with learning about FMA is that there are just so many charlatans posing as "experts" out there. Despite there being some shaky evidence that distinct Filipino Martial Arts existed as far back as the 7th century AD, it was only in the 20th century that the study of Filipino Martial Arts was formalized, so most techniques aren't so much formal traditions and specific movesets (as they are in the Japanese and Chinese martial arts), rather they are practical kinesthetic principles handed from generation to generation bidirectionally (that is, the "teacher" also learns from his/her "students") which don't really lend themselves to being disseminated in "dojo"-style learning environments (where a singular "master" instructs students and the flow of instruction proceeds in only one direction). To make FMA instruction more appealing to a Western audience used to traditional Chinese and Japanese modes of training though, many supposed guro pad their curriculum with pseudo-religious ritual, quasi-mystical babble, and cheap philosophy. The cartoon version was a horribly exaggerated and caricatured "pacifist." The comic book version was much better... Larry Hama portrayed him as someone who preferred to use non-lethal force in the course of his duties, but he was neither squeamish nor did he hold riculously unrealistic views about violence and its use. Read GI Joe Special Missions #3 if you can find it... it's probably one of the better "character studies" of one of the less popular Joe characters. Thanks for the info Zulu. I don't remember as much from the comics as I do the cartoons and I was into the comics as much as I was the cartoon.

As Zulu said, Lifeline was was a bit less strident about his pacifism in the Marvel run. In the DDP comics, Lifeline carried a gun and even fired it a couple of times. Battle Files portrays him as someone opposed to unneccessary violence. See Frontline #'s 5-8, and issue 38. Lifeline is my favorite character, but in my 'verse, he is not a pacifist.

So does anyone have a pic of the new ROC Footloose's file card? Someone was saying it was sort of a compilation of original Footloose and Claymore. Anybody know anything about this?
Oh, and it was my birthday yesterday. So I'm 30 now.

And happy belated birthday to Oliver. 30 huh? A lot of people dread turning 30, but I'm getting to the age where I'm starting to wish I was as young as 30. |
