I have the Jungle Assault Ripcord - I'm a little disappointed in that his stupid hat doesn't fit.

Second, I saw in the pictures that his hat doesn't exactly fit... I was hoping it was just a problem with the picture or the prototype. Is that hat just too small? How are the rest of the accessories?

First, how did you get him? Ebay? Do you have any other early release figures?

How are the rest of the accessories? His hat is just too small - grab a hat from a PIT Commando and try to stick it on one of the Ripcord figures, and you'll see what I mean. I'm not a fan of the pistol he comes with, although that might just be personal preference. The G11-style rifle he comes with he can't hold in both hands (same problem Helix has with it). The one with the drum canister on the bottom is a little better, and that's the one I use with him.

Brilliant! I can't paint but you almost don't have to. Cause I can't stand The BBQ we have. or Blowtorch for that matter. Charbroil looks a little better. |

Okay, here is the skinny on what the US army does for Artic Airbourne insertion.
It is handled by the SF primarily. Both 1st Group and 10th Group are trained for jumps in blizzard like conditions and extreme cold weather. There is also one airbourne infantry unit in Alaska that is trained for the mission as well. They actually don't have much special gear for the mission either. They caculate windspeed and other factors for figuring the point at which they jump. The 18D that I spoke with said they pretty much shop at RFI with the unit credit card for snivle gear, because other than some of the neoprene, the army's cold weather issue is inadequate. I asked about the extreme cold and what they did for that and his comment was try not to pee your self and that they use the hand warmers from any sporting goods/outdoor store in their boots and gloves. He said that you do fall faster in cold weather. Main concerns for training are similar to those of jumpin in the rain. Parachuttes getting wet can not be re-used until they have adequately been dried, and there aren't that many places you can dry a parachute. So the maintanence of the shutes is a priority. They are usually dropped with limited equipment like snow mobiles (no guns on them either...no polar battle bear i guess) They have skis, ski poles, and snowshoes as well as Ice climbing gear. He said the misions are usually quiet, because the first couple hours are spent acclimating and getting warmed up from the jump, but it isn't a concern because bad guys get cold too. |

Xsoldier, thanks for the follow up; I've been really curious to hear what you found out. That's really interesting. I'm interested to hear about this Infantry Unit in Alaska - are they part of 6th Infantry? I wonder if the faster fall times mean they're limited to jump with less gear for weight concerns, or if they use different parachutes?

Guys, 2 more characters I've thought about adding to my Custom ODA Team - I'm thinking of ordering 2 heads from Broken Arrow Toys of guys with berets... I'm thinking of Big Ben and Sky Mate. Their berets would obviously be painted Tan for the SAS, but I thought it might be cool to have an international component to the team. What do y'all think. I wonder if Marine Deadpool can paint a DPM pattern for them.

I think xsoldier's source is referring to the 172d Infantry Brigade, which used to be stationed in Alaska. They were deactivated in 2006, though, but subsequently reactivated in 2008 as part of the V Corps in Germany.

I think you need a separate SAS force Oliver. Maybe Big Ben, Skymate, maybe Lt. Stone and Action Force has a few to choose from as well.
But if you get a mustached head with a Beret there are a few guys who could wear that, like Dial Tone, Colton, Jammer. Do you have a Air Combat Controller for your ODA team? Who is part of that team now? Claymore, Falcon, Duke, Flint, Beachhead, Kamakura. Recondo, Outback? Big Brawler right? It's a 12 man team right? I figure Jammer from Action Force should be an Air Combat Controller. (So should Dial-tone) Although Breaker has always had terrible figures I feel like his filecard reads like possible Green Beret. Stalker as well, but he might just be hard core Ranger. |
