Troynos, if you don't want to create an Air Field, that's fine. I can understand that it would be difficult with a Mountain base. I think the Flagg provides you a solution, but that's just me. The Joes don't need a huge Air Force, but a few Jets to cover them for small missions would be a good thing to have... obviously, if they need to be apart of a sustained campaign, the other U.S. Forces would have to come into play.
I think it genuinely depends on how Cobra works in your Joeverse... are they a small terrorist organization? Or are they a terrorist Army that poses a serious threat to global security? If the former, then fine... the Joes can operate as a small unit to counter a small terrorist force. If the latter, well... one must keep up with the Joneses. If Cobra took over France, Joe would not be able to handle it without help. The Joes would go in on specific small goal kind of missions (take Cobra out of this research facility, rescue the hostages, etc..). I just don't see the need for the Joes to have an Air Force, same with Navy. The only elements from those that I think the Joes really need are the capabilities to move people and equipment around. The logistics just don't make it really that feasible. Sure can have the Flagg, but that can only be in one place at once and for the Joes (at least mine), they're running multiple missions at once and the chances of the Flagg always being where it's goign to be most needed? Pretty slim. So instead, they have a standing code that can be used to call in air support from any nearby airbase. They do have their own C-130s and helicopters. They also have an AC-130 and Grumman Hawkeye.

This is an interesting debate, but since you're using A-10s and other aircraft which require a lot of mechanics, crew chiefs, etc, why not include some Skystrikers too. Typically fighter jets are used as fighter-bombers and for forward air support. In Nam F-4s were often called in to suppress enemy forces in areas where artillery couldn't reach. So even though A-10s are nice to have around, the Skystrikers could fulfill the same role but at longer ranges and faster.
The USAF could still take care of the larger campaigns and provide the necessary backup for the Joes when total air superiority is needed. |

The location of where the skystrikers can come from is still the issue for me. I think that the Joes would end up using the USAF alot more then they would their own Skystrikers because of location and range and time to target.
If you're in Trucial Abysmia and need some air support, you can't be waiting for the Flagg to get into position to launch a flight and then still wait for the jets to get to you; or waiting for the Skystrikers to come from the base in North America (or wherever). No, you'd put the call into the USAF right away cause they'd have flights that are closer.

I think you have to suspend belief somewhat with all Joe Vehicles if you want to include them.
for example: 1. They use some sort of advanced fuel Cell which gets 1000 miles to the gallon or runs on hydrogen or something. Reason: you know Cobra would be working on it and once discovered the Joes (with Matt Trakker's help) would reverse engineer it so it works on all vehicles. 2. The USS Flagg is some sort of advanced smaller Aircraft Carrier. It can do like 40 knots or something more. It has to have advanced counter-measures for Subs, aerial attacks, and ship to ship fighting ability. Plus amphibious delivery capabilities. Most of all it runs on a skeleton crew. 500 or less. Reason it works: as far as vetting the crew what do submarine crews do. They stay at sea for months. I don't think these people would have to take the vow of death either. Perhaps someone like Ace would be permanently stationed there. Or the Joe pilots rotate through as wing commanders Hate to go back to the Tarawa but it holds 35 aircraft which is a reasonable number. I think the Joes should stick to VTOL but with the carrier I would say all aircraft even the X-19 are at least VSTOL. 3. Joe Maintenance crews have to be some of the best in the world and they operate like a Jiffy Lube or something. Plus they have to be cross trained in mulitple vehicles and also function in other support roles. So the Wheeled/Armor mechanics would be the same. The Aircraft/Helicopter would be the same as would the Naval guys. I think if you want to worry about the Garbage collection, cleaning, refrigeration repair, food prep and paperwork, this doesn't need to be a big crew at the PITT. Reason:When I worked a grocery store with 150 employees. The Admin staff was only 20 people and 5 were store leadership. Each team took out there own trash. The cleaning crew was like 5 people and they handled general maintenance as well. Sure you had to call in refrigeration repair but it was the same two guys that showed up. Generally you fixed your own equipment when possible. Personally I don't like the vow of death in IDW, as it makes things too hard. I figure the Joe Assignment is a year long commitment and no support for family is provided on base. (PITT) I think an underground PITT at Benning is a perfect cover. (Was that Tanksmashers?) |

If air support is deemed necessary for the sucess of the operation, I'd imagine they'd have jets parked at friendly airfields in neigboring countries or have the Flagg sitting off the coast in advance so they can be used at a moment's notice. Your air support doesn't have to be fielded at your home bases. Contigency plans will have already been decided on, and if no air support is planned, and some units gets into trouble, then that unit is on its own. |
