I've been thinking about this dead Joe thing. It could work if the mission capable Joes had to "die" and were reassigned new names upon joining the unit. They'd have to have some pretty strict no-contact rules with the support staff, and you'd still have operators who knew each other before they "died" running into each other (since the SOC community is too small to get 250 people who have never had contact with one another). Other than some high ranking admin officers, the unit CO and the unit recruiter, no one would necessarily know that these DA Joes were operating under false identities.
So they could still function and not have to hide out on the base at all times, but could still be denied if they were captured based on account of the false information. |

Here's some UK oddities...
Flint is English and is from Lincoln. He wears a US belt as it was an honourary award for help in a classified mission (as 10 year olds we just accepted that!) Jaye is actually Irish (from Cork) though the Action Force file card does still have GI Joe on her pocket! Roadblock is from Brixton, London. That would mean his accent is very close to Heavy Duty's in the movie!!!! Footloose is Andrew Mackay, from Dundee, Scotland (where I ended up in Med School) Some of the birthplaces are directly inspired by the US ones. Beachhead now comes from Auckland, New Zealand, keeping the Au part. BBQ is italian and his family have been in the Naples fire brigade for 7 generations... |

Here's something I noticed a few years ago but I only remembered now after working on the Monkeywrench image/file for my project. In the anarchist Dreadnok's 1986 filecard, it mentions that he enjoys listening to Tchaikovsky's and it also mentions that he was born on Guy Fawkes Day.
V for Vendetta, my favourite Alan Moore work, was being written as an infrequently released mini-series at the time (I think he was about two-thirds of the way through the narrative by 1986), The titular character, V, dresses up in a Guy Fawkes costume, and in one pivotal scene, blows up the London parliament buildings whilst listening to the 1812 Overture on a record player. Coincidence? Or was Hama inspired by the character of V (an advocate of anarchy) and used elements from the V for Vendetta comics to craft a background for Monkeywrench? |

I don't think GI Joe itself would have to be a secret military organization, completely unknown to the public or foreign govts. But that doesn't mean it can't conduct highly covert or clandestine operations. The operations that need to be kept a secret would be, but sometimes in certain scenarios the Joes could operate out in the open, with no need to cover up its actions.
However, because some operations require intelligence gathering and espionage and covert missions, etc, it would be useful to have some Joes who do not officially exist (dead) or who do not work for the US (rogue warriors), units whose actions can be denied or even condemned by the US govt. Quote:
Well sort of like Delta. The Delta-ish Joes wouldn't work directly with support staff and all other personnel, and they would'n't wear insignia and typical military uniforms, nor would they openly broadcast their identities or jobs. "Dead" just means they don't show up in accessible documents or public records.

The other problem with having "Dead Staff" is a simple matter of money. They all have to be paid and they all leave a money trail. I could see them having cover identities and such. Otherwise what do they do for ID? and further, what happens when they retire or finish their stint? unless joe means "for life".
The joes would still have some sort of paper shuffling to do, requisition forms, mission plans, toilet paper. They all have to come somwhere and go somewhere so having a base with a cover is a better way to go. I've been doing some research and have decided to put my HQ at Ft Bragg. Their cover will be a fictional company of the 528th Sustainment Brigade. This gives them a) access to support personnel and possible recruitment scout oppurtunities b) access to a real world outside the joes. Stalker and Wet Suit at least have families, I'm sure some of the others do as well. c) It's a plausible excuse for why so many mixed branch servicemen are coming and going. Also, anyone wanting to pry will notice that the two biggest guys on the team (Gung Ho and RB) also happen to be cooks....if one can get away with only making Gumbo as a specialty.. |

V started publishing in 1982 and finished in 1988, according to wikipedia.

Unrelated - I got my Wal-mart exclusive two-packs last night. That version of Gung Ho is now my default for the character. Very cool. I also have a ROC/Night Force Tunnel Rat now that I need to figure out what to do with. Customize into something else, or trade?

Finally decided to place my Joe base. It'll be in the fictional Ft Hollingsworth, underneath a fictional town called Hama, in Robeson County NC.
I've decided on a Maxwell Smart type thing. The main entrance is actually a few km's away in Ft Bragg. The fascade is the fictional 33rd Support Company, part of the 528th SOSB which supports the Spec Ops community. Joes enter the building which is staffed by Joe personnel and descend into an elevator (like the original Pitt) and use 2 underground fast rail transporters to the "Real" base. It potentially solves a huge personnel problem. This way, Joe families can still live "on base" and they still have access to a real base life and the rest of the world. They also have access to the Air Lift command at nearby Pope AFB too. Also, it means they can run the Pitt on a "barebones" crew and delegate repairs etc to other companies in the 528th. |
