Well they could recruit and staff within a few years so they could conceivability on paper move certain personnel to combat positions and then list them as KIA.
So, within a goal of staffing the Pitt within a oh lets say four years they could do it right? |

So you recruit some jet fighters and pilots, now you need to get the flight crews, control towers, maintenance, etc.. to go along with it. The biggest "issue" with the Joes is that they have never been accurate with the amount of staff needed. There's no tank in the world that takes 1 person to drive and fire at the same time. A howitzer has a crew of 5-10 depending on the size (they're getting less and less crew as they develop newer ones). A mortar isn't just 1 person, there's 4 people to a mortar. There's ammo bearers for the machine gunners (kind of like what Tunnel Rat had Scoop doing during his "premiere", carrying the extra M-60 ammo and the extra barrel). So even the mission "staff" is more then what is portrayed. So you bring aboard Clutch and the VAMP, now you need at least 1 mechanic to keep the VAMP up and running. Clutch can help out, but his primary is driving for missions. You'd also want to have at least 1 back-up VAMP in the motor pool for when the main one is out on missions or down and out and in need of repairs. Get more then 3-4 mechanics and now you need a supervisor. You'd probably want 24/7 staffing, or at least 2 shifts, so that the work gets done as quick as possible. It's a rapid response unit, can't be delayed repairing vehicles, so now you're talking 2 shirts, 6-8 mechanics and 2 supervisors. It's the military, so there'd be an officer in charge of the motor pool and staff. So Clutch and Crankcase can take the spot of a couple of mechanics, for when not on missions, but you'd want to make sure they motor pool isn't completly short handed if both Clutch and Crankcase are out on missions.

Troynos, you have given more thought to the support staff that I ever imagined. It cracks me up. Man, just buy some Green Shirts and call it a day... aren't they on sale at TJ Maxx or Big Lots or somewhere?

Well sort of like Delta. The Delta-ish Joes wouldn't work directly with support staff and all other personnel, and they would'n't wear insignia and typical military uniforms, nor would they openly broadcast their identities or jobs. "Dead" just means they don't show up in accessible documents or public records.

I think guys like Clutch and Crankcase should have secondary skills as mechanics and such, but primarily they are infantry, frontline soldiers who have necessary driving and repair specialties. The routine maintenance conducted on base is performed by greenshirt mechanics. On-the-job and in-the-field maintenance is performed by Clutch and Crankcase, when they don't have the luxury of a hangar and the usual equipment.

The other problem with having "Dead Staff" is a simple matter of money. They all have to be paid and they all leave a money trail. I could see them having cover identities and such. Otherwise what do they do for ID? and further, what happens when they retire or finish their stint? unless joe means "for life".
The joes would still have some sort of paper shuffling to do, requisition forms, mission plans, toilet paper. They all have to come somwhere and go somewhere so having a base with a cover is a better way to go. I've been doing some research and have decided to put my HQ at Ft Bragg. Their cover will be a fictional company of the 528th Sustainment Brigade. This gives them a) access to support personnel and possible recruitment scout oppurtunities b) access to a real world outside the joes. Stalker and Wet Suit at least have families, I'm sure some of the others do as well. c) It's a plausible excuse for why so many mixed branch servicemen are coming and going. Also, anyone wanting to pry will notice that the two biggest guys on the team (Gung Ho and RB) also happen to be cooks....if one can get away with only making Gumbo as a specialty.. |

BTW, doing some research on my joe organization, I noticed that Charbroil was a Warrant Officer as of the Anti-Venom squad..sigh. Now I have to redo some stuff.
Oh and I FINALLY got an Ice Dagger!!!!!!! First one I've ever seen in Oz. And because it wouldn't scan, they sold it to me for the price of an Alpha class vehicle. |
