I tend to look at the plain Viper as a Marine Equivalent tougher than the regular Blue Shirts but this is just the first stage.
Jungle Vipers as the Rangers. I see the Range-Vipers as Green Berets. No they don't get the language training (or do they?), but they get sent out to the toughest places and have to make do. I figure they do interact with the locals as either a support force or pull Guerrilla and harrassing Tactics. I would assume that this is the unit that Ex-Green Berets who joined Cobra would start. I like the Theory of the Para-Vipers as Force Recon. Works for me. Maybe ROC Elite Vipers take this all one step further as perhaps they come from various special ops units from around the world, and they pride themselves in joining a unit that maybe the Cobra Delta Force. or SAS. but then what about the Alley-Vipers. (I can't get over how much I like these Elite-Vipers. the only thing they are missing is a Cobra Emblem. Get yourself one if you see one would be my recommendation) As far as the CGs go I like the idea of a self sufficient unit, but I just see all CGs as officers. Here's my take: For me since there are a million versions now. (This is my verse of course) All are officers, they are commissioned as Capt. right off the bat. You figure all are college educated and Lawyers or accountants. So much like our Armed forces they get commissions. They are the spies of Cobra as well. But they have other roles as well. Like the SS they are the best trained troops in Cobra. They are the Political Officers of Cobra, sort of like how Soviet era Russia was set up. So he may not be the field commander but he could just as easily put a bullet in the field commanders head and take over.. They are trained as military officers and are usually brighter than what gets put in the field. Shadow Guards are the Gestapo wing of the Crimson Guards. Internal Affairs sort of. Crimson Guard Immortals are the Highest ranking CGs and they do serve as battle field commanders occasionally. They all hold the rank of Colonel. They are only tapped for duty to serve with Cobra Commander guard detactment. Cobra Commander does not travel lightly armed. But he keeps his detachment with him at all times. If one of these guys tells you to do something you know it came straight from the Commander. I figure there are only like 20 of these guys. Crimson guard commanders are 0-5 equivalents and they serve as Battlefield commanders and are the next step down. Most CGs are Capts or Maj and there is one attached to every unit. Like a Chaplain. Oh, here's something I want to say to y'all...
There's been a lot of discussion on the Forum about "True Fans" lately. I think it's a meaningless title, that's really only a way of saying, "I'm better than some other people on the forum." It's a little ridiculous because there's no way to really quantify it. And it's often used in a snobby and pejorative way to look down on other fans. I think everyone has to decide what "True Fandom" means for themselves. That being said, All you old regulars on this thread are "True Fans" in my book. You guys are the fans I respect most, and I consider you all to be my friends. There are a lot of good people on the forum... but y'all are the best, as far as I can tell. But I come here first since we keep it civil. I love being able to share ideas and get some great feedback from you guys. Yet I also find there is high level we all sort of obtained of Joe History. We tend to have a lot of the stuff memorized, be it cartoons or comics and especially filecards. Plus we all were bothered by the way so much of it didn't make sense so we made sense out of it ourselves. Last edited by Loose Cannon; 08-18-2009 at 01:07 AM.. |

I think the way you're envisioning the the Crimson Guard makes a lot of sense. And I think the file cards support your method. My approach is simply because there was so much stuff that was part of the Crimson Guard that it was becoming a huge part of my Cobra Army. The Crimson Guard is so big in my Cobra forces that they couldn't all be officers ;) So they became my self contained Blitzkrieg Air Cav Unit. I see them like the Nazi SS of Cobras... they're too proud to associate with other Cobra Forces. Even the Para-Vipers and Range Vipers - the CG's think that if the Para-Vipers and Ranger Vipers were really that good or dedicated that would have tried to be CG's.

I think everyone has to decide what "True Fandom" means for themselves. I've never really thought in-depth of my "fandom" though. I'm not even sure if I'm a "real" fan of the stand-alone GI Joe property as much as I'm a fan of military fiction on one hand, and comic books and action figures on the other. I've only really enjoyed GI Joe when expressed in a couple of formats: as comic books written by Larry Hama (or any other similarly competent and skilled writer, of which there are fewer and fewer working in non-superhero action/adventure comics these days) and as action figures based on concepts and characters that originated within Larry Hama's GI Joe work. Everything that falls outside of those two sets (such as the bulk of the post-1994 GI Joe characters, the Devil's Due Comics, etc.), I have significantly less inherent interest in. If I do express "fandom" for these newer things, it's more often than not because of the quality of the craft that went into the product (some of the new RoC figures, for example, or Christos Gage's work on the GI Joe: Cobra mini-series) and not because they are branded as being GI Joe properties per se. I guess that makes me a "selective" GI Joe fan and not a fan of all things GI Joe, but I'd like to think that makes me as much a "true" fan as somebody who likes the GI Joe brand in all its forms. |

Oh I have that problem with army building too. The CGs especially. But I still only have about 40 so it's not too big a problem.
I wonder how much more training the CGs get over say a Para-Viper or a Range-Viper? You figure Airborne; Scuba; Desert; Mountaineering; Plus tons of vehicle training. Sort of everything in the arsenal. Their Hand to Hand technique has to be better than all the others just on principle. like Cobra-FU or something. |

The Para-Vipers and Range Vipers and Alley Vipers are probably all a more elite than the average, basic CG. However, the CG's will never admit that - "Semper Scarlet Serpent!" So if you ask a CG who would win, A CG or a Para-Viper, the answer will always be: The CG! Even if it's not true. I figure the CG's are trained in all kinds of operations and combat - and very few other Cobras would be able to be on par with them. I liked your term for Cobra hand-to-hand, "Cobra-Fu". Nice.

I suppose the opposite of a true fan is a casual fan. Someone who only knows the Cartoons and never bothered to learn more about the characters and wonder what else is there that we don't know or can only guess about.
I mean many people treat Duke as the Joe Commander over Hawk, and rightly so since that is what was served to the television fan. But I can't say that isn't a true fan. To me if at some point in your youth you pretended to be Snake-Eyes or Storm Shadow you are a true fan. I find certain things about ROC a little disappointing but until about 2 weeks ago I haven't been this excited about GIJoe in a long time. They need to bring back the daily Cartoons, which I think maintained the fandom more than anything. I only wish I could participate in the creative process of GIJoe, not that I want to put out a better product, but as a fan I would see that as the ultimate prize to be part of the lore. Preferrably in a larger role than just a figure like say Red Zone, which is a fan made into a figure. But I'd be happy if that was all I got. |

If they turned me into a figure - I wouldn't care if it was the most obscure figure that came with the worst vehicle. I would be ecstatic... and at least the Joes would have another Mississippian on the team ;)
I totally agree that they should bring back the cartoon. They should put it on right now. Surely they could do it. If I ran a TV station, I would show it everyday after school. Why isn't Hasbro doing more about that? They should have a cartoon in the works, but if that's too expensive to make a new one, they should just rebroadcast the old one.

Troynos, I liked your kitbashed SEAL. He's really cool. The Airborne head works great for Torpedo. Are you going to do some more? Did you give him Shipwreck's gear?
