DDP changed a lot of the ranks in G.I. Joe, and while sometimes those changes made sense other times they made no sense at all.
"Barrel Roll" is unique case. Normally, it takes at least a Warrant Officer to fly anything in the army, and the Air Force doesn't even have Warrant Officers anymore - only Officers fly in the Air Force. Barrel Roll's two other siblings seem to be Army. That's certainly not conclusive because a lot of siblings join different branches of the military. For example, my brother flew for the Air Force. I think Tall Creeper's dad and uncle were in different service branches as well. He's also unique because of what he flies: it's a piece of complete fiction. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great little powered glider, but it's a little closer to Star Wars than reality - but it's perfect for the Joes. The problem presented by his aircraft is that there is no clear guidelines for who flies such an aircraft. Could an enlisted man fly that thing? Would an Officer be sent out on solo sniper missions? Does the USAF even have good snipers? He's a bit of a mystery, but as I've read all his file cards it seems that his glider is deployed out of the back of an airplane, sort of like a HALO jumper. His main specialty is as a sniper. The glider seems to simply be a fancy way of deploying 'Barrel Roll' into a position behind enemy lines. In fact, v3 'Barrel Roll' did not come with a glider; he was only a marksman. My best guess is that 'Barrel Roll' is an Army sniper. He operates solo, like Low-light, and no officer would do that kind of work. His glider isn't some high-altitude fighter jet; it's a supped up hang glider for behind the lines insertions into geographically difficult/remote areas. I would list him as his file card does: E-4 |

I agree that the secondary military specialty seems weird, but it's on the same file card that lists him as a sniper. I don't know. What do you think?

What doesn't everybodies Shipwreck/Lady Jaye/Flint fly Skystikers? I stick to file cards I guess. Some guys have different unit affiliations and ranks. Which reminds me,
Is Barrel Roll Air force? In the comics he's referred to as Lt. not a Corporal like the filecard. |

I follow the filecards with rank and backgrounds but I follow the Sunbow animation for personalities. Not all of my Joes can fly a copter or jet lest it state that they were appropriately trained in their filecards. Not only does it not make sense, but GI Joe is based on a special unit derived from the whole of the U.S. military taking each individual based on their unique skill set. If they were all pilots of every vehicle they had in their arsenal, then it doesn't make sense to have an Ace, or Wild Bill, or Steeler, or Covergirl. Their specialties...Jet Pilot, Chopper Pilot, Tank drivers respectively aren't really specialties.

This discussion of Barrel Roll, reminds me of a discussion that we had earlier in this thread: which sniper on the Joe team is the best?
I think many of us have a tendency to select Low-Light because he was the first Joe (yes, I know Scarlett was a qualified sniper (allegedly - the USMC does NOT train women to be snipers), but it wasn't her specialty). ..... If we can take the lack of the need of a spotter as some indication of a higher skill level among snipers, it would appear to me that Low-Light and Barrel Roll may be the best sharpshooters on the Joe Team. What do you guys think? I also view Barrel Roll and Low-Light as the better among the best but I kinda view that all the Joe snipers are so proficient and deadly that they all operate without spotters. That's why they are Joe's. Also I would assume that any one rated as a sniper in the Joe can and often get sent out by themselves. Barrel Roll: I use him as a covert ops agent and sniper. Often sent by himself. He is also attached to my paraglider unit. Crosshair: I don't use Tiger or Night Forces. But reading his filecard and the story about sniping CLAWS Commander just makes him seem too badass to need a spotter. Hollow Point: Very excellent point. In my Joeverse, even though he taught a certain way prior to Joes and when training Joe per his filecard, he operates differently in the field as sniper. I use him with my marine unit almost exclusively. I don't use him as a helicopter pilot and I use his locust as a swamp buggy. As far as helicopter recon, I use him as an onboard sniper... making a case for no spotter. Low-Light: nuff said. |

Though each member holds a military rank, it doesnt seem to hold any precedence in the Joe team. you have low ranking enlisted flying jets and ordering around high ranking officers and what not. It just the best of the best thrown together and the biggest Alpha Male takes charge.

Tall Creeper, I hear what you're saying. However, if you'll go to yojoe.com and just look at 8" Flint's file card, I think there's a strong case to be made for Flint's hand-to-hand combat skills. The Snake-Eyes that they made at the same time says the same thing about Flint and Snake-Eyes as partners.
On thing to note: at that time in the 8" production, the figures/line of toys were no longer being called "Sigma Six". They were being called "A Real American Hero". I understand that the 8" line is not authoritative for the 3.75" figures, but I think it can been seen as informative. It's a Hasbro produced version of Flint. In the 8" line he's the top Intelligence/espionage operative in G.I. Joe, and he's a lot closer to Snake-Eyes personally and in operational abilities. |

The best back story is the filecards and the comic book period.
The cartoon was to kiddie and was more of science fantasy. The best joe stories were from the comic books at least the fist 100 issue's.
