Thanks!
No strict cut-off for the Cobra guys. I'd probably have Wild Weasel as an external augmentee (just like Scrap-Iron, Zartan, Firefly, and Storm-Shadow). Basically a specialist who doesn't figure into the corporate "chain of command" because he isn't a formally trained manager or executive but is paid commensurate to an executive because of his skills in his particular field. I'll be using a freer hand with writing the Cobra filecards, though. For example, I'm thinking of using the falsified military backgrounds for Wild Weasel, Scrap-Iron, and Copperhead when they posed as members of the Phoenix Guard as their real backgrounds. It only makes sense that many of Cobra's top operatives would be former military men. So a CEO COO CFO CTO what other departments? Development? Marketing? Lobbyists? Legal? Research? |

Maybe it was the camel toe that gave that impression.

Right now, I'm trying to work out the details of its operations. I'm thinking of it as a conglomerate of M.A.R.S. (owned by Destro), Extensive Enterprises (headed by the Crimson Twins), and a private military contracting firm (a lá Blackwater/Xe) headed by Major Bludd. Fred I (as respected businessman "Fred Broca"), Destro (as his "civilian entrepreneur" role), Tomax, Xamot, Bludd, the Baroness (as European executive Anastasia Cisarovna), Mindbender & Crystal Ball serving as the public faces of the company, but with Cobra Commander secretly calling the shots from behind the scenes. Raptor could probably work as the CAO (Chief Accounting Officer) given his history as a crooked number-cruncher although updating the bird costume so that it works within the corporate paramilitary concept is going to be a challenge. |

I'm still trying to work it out... it'll all depend on what kind of company I decide Cobra to be.

Give Raptor a glide suit.

I could easily find a role for Cesspool. Not too sure about Voltar (he looks like a Bludd clone). Serpentor is definitely out (I view him in the same light as Cobra-La), although there might be a creative way to make him an "artificial" person without actually making him a clone (a brainwashed ex-soldier?). Who's Dr. Knox? |

I was actually thinking of making him a flamboyant metrosexual type... eyeshadow, feather boas, feather jackets, etc.

Dr. Cassandra Knox. She shows up in the 2nd to last Marvel comic as someone that upgraded the BATs to impress Cobra. In DDP, after Mindbender is killed, she's CC's chief science officer.

Ah, that explains why I've never heard of her. My knowledge of the Marvel Comics past issue #108 is spotty at best, and all I know about the DDP stuff is limited to the summaries and profiles in the Data Desk Handbook, the first Frontline mini-series, and the GI Joe Declassified mini-series written by Hama.

I'm going to start the Cobra side of the project off by strictly defining what kind of business Cobra engages in. I want to make Cobra a company that regular people can see themselves working for. The genius behind Hama's characterization of Cobra Commander is that he's initially a fairly sympathetic character, or at least a character one can empathize with. We've all experienced being "victimized" by government inefficiency and red tape or felt like government regulations are designed specifically to keep "the little guy" down. Cobra Commander, I think, speaks to that side of us that wishes that government had less of a say about how we live our lives and how we choose to make a living. That in itself, I think, is a perspective that we can all empathize with to some extent. In my Joe-verse, what makes Cobra Commander a "villain" is not that he's "evil" or he wants to "rule the world" (is that even possible?). What makes him dangerous is that he doesn't care who he hurts in his quest to make a profit and achieve corporate success. Cobra represents reckless capitalism unchecked by business ethics or human compassion, driven by blind greed and consumerism.
I'd like to imagine that the people working for Cobra rationalize their actions by saying that people are going to kill each other anyway, whether it be for political, ideological, or economic reasons, with both sides of any given conflict thinking that they're in the right. Cobra only provides these people with what they want: weapons, training, and expert military advising. Maybe they help "cultivate" a market for their services, but better that somebody profit from all the death and mayhem inherent in the world rather than let all the carnage produce nothing of positive material value. |
