Well, it seems the example you cited has already been addressed, but the point you make is a fair one. However, I don't think it contradicts my argument. My argument is only one of choice.
If Hasbro has issued a character a sniper rifle (or any other piece of equipment), then it seems reasonable to assume a certain level of training or expertise with that equipment on the part of the character. It certainly isn't required. If someone doesn't like the idea of Tunnel Rat as a sniper - they're under no obligation to us him as such; it's not like we're talking about Low-Light or Cross Hair. However, because Tunnel Rat was issued with a sniper rifle, I don't think they're anything wrong with using him as a sniper if someone wanted to use him that way. It's an option to understand the character a little differently - an option to conclude some fact about their qualifications - based on evidence provided by Hasbro in the package: just a different form of information than the file card... sort of like Repeater's Ranger Tab. It's not in his file card; it's in the picture of the character on the front of the package. It certainly does not seem any more of an extrapolation than Recondo being Ranger qualified, Repeater being in the Ranger Regiment, or the qualifications of the 4 questionable Marines. It's just an exercise in attempting to extrapolate certain information from an indirect source. That's all I'm saying. |

I agree, I think TR is sniper trained, would make sense with what he is tasked to do.
Alpine is a ranger, so it's okay for him to be part of the ranger units with speciality training. I wouldn't have him part of a stationed unit, but as a "floater" (same with Outback), that can be deployed as needed depending on the mission. Recondo is jungle specific, so that's where he gets stationed and deployed.

So where do you guys place Alpine in your Joeverse? I don't have a mountaineering sub-team and his uniform, though cool, doesn't quite fit with my infantry or aerial assault teams. I've come to think of him the same way I think of Outback--a loner, used for single-man insertions, either recon or special resuce.
I use Night Force Outback, so my Outback is in Night Force and works as a Ranger/secondary point man after Spearhead. If Night Force has to split up, Outback is the point man for Bravo Team. The only "single man" insertions I do involve some of the operatives that work out of my Intelligence/Black Ops office, headed up by Claymore. Storm Shadow, Low-Light, Chuckles, Agent Faces, Big Brawler, Mace, Lady Jaye, Super Trooper (Eagle), etc. are about the only Joes I use for that kind of operation. Everybody else generally works as part of a team. The Renegades, and Ghost Squad also work out of that office and their missions are likewise completely off book.

Ghost Squad?
I love Hit & Run, he's my favorite. I typically use him with the Airborne Insertion Team and he will now be tasked to the Airborne/Insertion/Rescue team when I get my Pararescueman done. This is the team that does airborne insertion missions and is also tasked with going behind enemy lines to rescue comrades.

Okay, so if you had to put together a 9-man rescue squad for silent insertion onto a sub-tropical island, with no armor, artillery or air support for backup, who do you send?

On the other hand, without a specific reference to SF training, I don't see anything wrong with simply recognizing him as an incredibly proficient Ranger (L.R.R.P.), and Special Operations NCO. I use him as the Command Sargent Major of my G.I. Joe Special Operations Command. The only other NCO Stalker has to answer to in my Joeverse is Duke, who serves as my Command Sargent Major for my entire G.I. Joe Team. Rock & Roll serves as my Command Sargent Major for my regular Army, mainly because he was the most Senior NCO who wasn't in a sub-team. Plus, he's tough to beat for seniority among the Joes.

I go by the Ranks on the File cards unless they have been specifically changed in the Comic book (Hawk, Beach-Head, Flint, Falcon, etc.). I go by Ranks and I have a Charted Chain of Command. I separate the Army, Air Force, and Navy/Marines into three commands, each commanded by the senior representative from that Branch. Sub-teams are different. They all fall under Special Operations Command. If a Joe team member is a member of a Sub-Team, that team member's duty station is with that Sub-Team unless specifically/specially directed otherwise. If a Joe is listed on 2 or more sub-teams, a priority or 'normal' status has been given to one assignment. For example, Stalker is both on Tiger Force and the Desert Patrol Squad. I have made the decision that the Priority for Stalker is the DPS, and he can aid Tiger Force if they need it.
Hawk: Overall Commander-in-Chief -Flint: General's Staff Warrant Officer of G.I. Joe (CW-5) -Duke: General's Staff Command Sargent Major of G.I. Joe (E-9) -Flint and Duke operate where ever they are need/directed to Command/advise. They work as the Right and Left hand of Hawk throughout the G.I. Joe chain-of-command and are able to mingle/work with the Sub-teams seamlessly because they are qualified in nearly all the Sub-teams/specialties. Keel-Haul: Navy/Marine Commander - Cutter is X-O (Executive Officer) Keel-Haul commands the U.S.S. Flagg and all aircraft and personnel stationed aboard (Marines, SEALs, and Slaughter's Marauders - unless command of the SEALs or S.M's is Superseded by Spec. Ops Command). PayLoad: Air Force Commander -Ace is X-O for Fixed Wing Aircraft -Wild Bill is Warrant Officer for Helicopters Gen. Flagg (Son of Original Gen. Flagg): Army Commander -Colonel Courage is X-O -Rock & Roll is Army Command Sargent Major -Captain Grid-Iron is C-O of Infantry Forces and personally leads the Ranger/LRRP Unit -Lt. Steeler is C-O of Armor -Major Barrage is C-O of Artillery -Major Storm is C-O of Logistics -Major Bullet-Proof is C-O of Urban Warfare/Police Operations: coordinates w/ Steel Brigade and Spec Ops. Gen. Colton is overall Commander of Special Operations which includes Intelligence, all the Sub-teams (Night Force, Tiger Force, Sky Patrol, etc.), and Special Operations Air Support. -Lt. Colonel Sure-Fire is X-O in charge of Intelligence/Sub Teams -Lt. Colonel Sky Striker is X-O in charge of Special Operations Air Support Captain Falcon is the C-O of all Sub-Teams and leads Night Force -Sgt Major Beach-Head is Commander of Tiger Force -First Sgt. Sky Dive Commands Sky Patrol Sargent Major Gung-Ho Commands Steel Brigade (Urban Warfare) -Sargent Major Stalker Commands Desert Patrol Squad -Sargent Major Slaughter Commands Slaughter's Marauders (Stationed on U.S.S. Flagg). -Chief Torpedo Commands the SEALs (Stationed on the U.S.S. Flagg) -Winter Operations Team is ad hoc -It should be noted that every Special Team has an Intelligence Operative in it's ranks. Note: There is NO Eco-Force, Mega Marines, Star Brigade, Street Fighter, Dino-Hunters, or any other CRAP Sub-team in my chain-of-command. Major Claymore is commander of all Intelligence/ Black Ops. Any individual Intelligence Operative works for this office. -Lady Jaye is Claymore's NCOIC (Basically his First Sgt.) -Chuckles, Mace, Agent Faces, Storm Shadow, Super Trooper (Eagle), Rapid Fire, Low Light, and the Renegades work out of this office. Night Force (and Ghost Squad) is generally given assignments from this office, which Falcon oversees personally. This system was worked out in coordination with my Brother. I'm sure it's not perfect, but we haven't found a flaw in it yet. It works really well for us. Granted, it's pretty complex and I'm a little OCD, but the military runs on good organization and since our collection is quite large, we need a good system. |

Oh, now I get to show off a little bit ;)
Earlier this year, I found an interesting auction on ebay... It was a prototype version of the Night Force 6-Pack from a few years ago, but this prototype version had a different color scheme on the figures' pants. Not only that, but the Action Man figure wasn't Action Man - he was a Night Force version of Tracker (That's right, they fixed his uniform after all this time!) I'm excited to tell y'all about these figures. They are the pride of my collection. Very rare. Let me see if I have pics...

sorry I don't have a photo of Beach-Head, but his paint, oddly enough, didn't really match the others.
