If you're referring to the "canon" Steeler, he's an ROTC graduate according to his original filecard.
If you're talking about the plausibility of Steeler being a "mustang" in your Joeverse, well, I'm pretty sure the Army doesn't have "mustangs" anymore (unlike the Marines and the Navy). The last time the Army allegedly commissioned NCOs was during the first half of the Vietnam War (and even that is disputed by some military historians). As for the commissioning of NCOs I can verify that there was a Mustang Officer named Lt James Hawkins who commanded the Tiger Force Platoon. See James Hawkins - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

You calling Hawk and Tomahawk two different guys? Why not use Rey or Flagg III?

Well perhaps he wasn't a true mustang and wasn't offered a direct commission but instead he left the military and then returned through OCS or ROTC. Possible?

I'm thinking it was ignorance and unfortunate coincidence.
I mean for a jungle team, Tiger Force is a great name (you know what I mean...). It's got a cool sound, name recognition (you hear Tiger, you think jungle) and all that. So for a jungle themed team, it is a good name. I just don't think they are familiar with the real Tiger Force.

I'd chalk it up to ignorance. In 88 I'm not sure how well versed the Joe design team was in anything realistic or military based. Some look good with the Tiger Force Stripes, others too Yellow. Then 15 years later they think Orange is a better color?

About Tiger Force in Vietnam, I'll just say this: It was war, and they were good at it. I know, I know. That isn't very politically correct. I know wearing human ears around one's neck seems grotesque and extreme, but those guys were amazingly good at thier job, and it's not a job that a lot of people were signing up to go do. Certainly bad things happened over there 40 years ago... but who knows what I would have done had I been in there place. I imagine a few tours in 'nam would be enough to warp anyone's sense of reality and judgement.
I know, I seem like a crazy man for defending the original Tiger Force. But I just can't stand in judgement of events that took place so long ago, and so far away... good, patriotic Americans who took their duty seriously and were good at their jobs. Vietnam was ugly. Parts of it were terrible. Maybe we should have never been there... but I think the reason we ultimately had to withdraw without a victory is because the American people/government were unwilling to do all that was necessary to win over there against an enemy without a sense of decency. Tiger Force simply played by a set of rules that were intended to beat the VC at their own game, and they were good at it. I can't condone killing Vietnamese civilians, then again, I don't much care for American servicemen getting killed either... in fact, I would say that bothers me a heck of a lot more. Quite simply, American lives are worth more to me than the lives of people from other countries. Because those American servicemen weren't mercs or professional soldiers, they were poor boys who got drafted, just waiting to go home and trying to live through their tours. That's just my two cents. Aside from that, I always thought the Joe Tiger Force was awesome... sure the colors were crazy, but I was like 8: it worked like a charm!

On another subject, I am seriously angry about this lack of RoC figures. Loose, I think you know what I mean. There are plenty of figures and vehicles on the shelves, but I have not seen one PIT Commando, Helix, RoC Para-Viper, RoC Eel, or General Hawk (not the one in the PIT). It's rediculous!
One guy on the Tank said he saw 6 Helixes at a Wal-Mart in Alaska... WHAT? We can't have them in the DC Metro area? This is crazy! Forget trying to troop build with PIT Commando, I'll be happy to get one and use him as Rapid Fire. On the other hand, I'm seriously going to troop build RoC Zartan by using his other head... I'm going to have a great MP Unit for my Joe HQ. I'm pumped. Law can have a whole unit to work with. I'm very excited. Also, Ice Viper is pretty great. I'm looking forward to getting about 6 of them. It's obviously a lot different than the original, but there are some nice nods to the original. I'm not enamored with the new Vipers... mainly because they look rediculous. I won't be troop building them. Oh, and my big news: My wife bought the PIT for me. And anyone who thought it wouldn't be cool... I'm sorry; It's awesome. It's not quite the old Mobile Command Center, and it's a lot different from The General, but I think it has a lot of strong points. As most of y'all know, my collection includes all the other Joe HQ, so I really wanted this one. But I'm not disappointed at all. It's a lot of fun, and my wife was really cool for not only letting me have it, but getting it for me. So Loose, if you and Fogger wanna come over and see the new PIT, you're welcome anytime. Let's meet up for a meal soon and maybe we can all ride around and try to find some new Joes.
