Given what Rod Whigham told me at Heroes, it probably was a combination of artists getting the style guides for his new look later than the cover artist did or just forgetting to use it. The Joe comic was, from what he said, always running late on the publishing end.

EDIT: Just read fogger1138's post. That's awesome that you actually got to talk to Rod Whigham. Last edited by zuludelta; 07-11-2009 at 02:01 PM.. |

It was pretty cool - I also got a Snake Eyes head sketch from him, which I'll post when I get around to scanning it.

That Wet-suit is pretty awesome. Nice job, Zulu.
Okay, on a side note, I just picked up volume 4 of the Classic GI Joe TPB and was reading issue 33 (Mar 1985) when I noticed that 8 of the original Joes--Zap, Grunt, Short-Fuze, Stalker, Rock N Roll, Flash, Breaker and Scarlett--got promoted by Austin, and Hawk is given full command of the Pit and GI Joe, which I think implies his promotion to Brigadier General. Steeler, Clutch, Grand Slam and Snakes Eyes were excluded. That means the following upgrades as of March 1985: Hawk O6 - O7 Stalker E5 - E6 Scarlett E5 - E6 Rock N Roll E5 - E6 Grunt E4 - E5 Short-Fuze E4 - E5 Breaker E4 -E5 Flash E4 - E5 Zap E4 - E5 Assumed upgrades: Since Steeler was an O1 in June 1982 when he was first introduced, he would have upgraded automatically to an O2 (after 18 months) by or before Dec 1983. And he would be on track to make Captain by or before June 1986 (after 4 years in service). As far as file cards go this is the highest we ever got for the 13 SE=E-8 Clutch=E-4 Steeler=0-1 Grand Slam=E-5 Hawk=0-8 (Although his last pre 25th figure has 3 stars on his lid) Scarlett=E-6 (W-3 to me now Zulu) Stalker=E-8 Rock'n'Roll=E-9 Zap=E-7 Short-Fuze=E-5 Breaker=E-5 Grunt=E-6 Flash E-5 (on ROC finally) Last edited by Loose Cannon; 07-11-2009 at 07:09 PM.. |

updates for 12 July 2009:
Taurus & Sub-Zero Design notes: - Researching a background for Taurus took some doing. Referenced a Turkey-specific almanac (hard to find comprehensive material written in English) and had to go digging through some DoD sites I'm not entirely sure I'm supposed to be peeking in (Google Chrome was having a spaz attack with all the unverified certificate warnings coming off of the DoD's servers). What I wanted to know was if there's a precedent for a foreign military or police officer working with a Department of Defense-vetted E.O.D. or combat engineer organization. Turns out there is. In 2008, there were three foreign military personnel employed by the DoD's JIEDDO (Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization): 2 foreign officers (I couldn't find anything about their nationality and rank) and a UK sergeant major. The thing about foreign E.O.D. experts is that a good number of them just have tons of practical and tactical field experience, above and beyond what US military and federal police personnel have, just by virtue of the long-standing conflicts going on in their native lands. UK bomb experts, for example, have the collective experience of 40 years of counter-IED operations against the Provisional Irish Republican Army. The Turkish special operations police bomb squads (to which I've sourced Taurus) have 30 years of counter-IED experience against the PKK and other militant groups. - Sub-Zero was pretty much a straight-up update, with PCU pants and an extreme cold weather mil-spec parka. To read their full filecards, click on the Filecard Project link in my signature. Last edited by zuludelta; 07-12-2009 at 04:17 PM.. Reason: Pictures updated |

I like the design on Taurus, but his left arm and foot look kind of wonky. Sub-Zero looks great in his simplicity.

Yeah, I guess I wasn't paying attention to my foreshortening. Corrected and updated.

Glad you like them C.I.A.D. By the end of the month, I hope to collect everything I've done (the filecards, the composite/airbrushed photos, text pieces, organizational diagrams, etc.) into a printable PDF file that people can reference, for recreational reading, or to use as a blueprint for their custom figures or "Joe-verses."
