I like Jason Aaron's non-superhero work (his The Other Side for DC/Vertigo is one of the better war comics I've read in recent years). I can't really talk intelligently or informatively about recent superhero comics. I stopped reading them around the turn of the century (with a few stray Ellis/Millar-penned The Authority TPBs serving as my lone connection to the spandex set). My last foray into anything remotely "superheroic" comics-wise was Garth Ennis' run on the mature readers Punisher title (which I've since dropped with Ennis' departure), and technically speaking, I think that book was more of a modern pulp crime/action title than a superhero comic. I guess The Boys counts as well, but that's more of superhero satire and parody than actual superhero action. Last edited by zuludelta; 07-10-2009 at 12:50 PM.. |

When Hasbro created Robo-Joe for the Star Brigade subteam,
somebody must have watched the movies Robo-Cop and Terminator. As for the Aliens, somebody musted have watched the movies Aliens and Predator. As for the next batch of aliens, if it had continued, somebody might have watched the movie Invasion of the Bodysnatchers |

Friday update:
Fast Draw & Backblast Design notes: - Found it infuriatingly difficult to update Fast Draw's look in a way that it's still plausible in a real-world setting whilst maintaining a visual connection to the original design. Settled on this look, mixing elements of a breacher's body armor with a multicam uniform. Doesn't exactly scream Fast Draw at first blush, but given the choice of hewing close to the original design (which I never liked) or using a freer hand with the re-design, I opted for the latter. - Always found Backblast's filecard to be somewhat hilarious. Growing up beside JFK International Airport, young New Yorker Edward Menninger decides to take up a career blasting planes out of the sky as a form of vicarious revenge against all the airliners that cost him sleep during his childhood. That's the type of gallows humour that's probably verboten now, though, especially when it comes to New York. Anyway, to keep with the light infantry/direct action theme, Backblast has been recreated as an infantryman, although he retains the original Air Defense Artillery theme as his secondary MOS. Continuing the awesome. I'm glad I could twist your arm long enough to include Backblast. He looks great! Fast Draw is a departure from his original design (although with the helmet and the heavier padding, there's still a subtle connection), but one that was absolutely necessary. I knew it was him, because while you altered his look, he didn't look like anyone else either.

I don't know. I think Fast Draw should have looked like that to begin with. Pure awesome on Backblast too.

New updates:
Wet-Suit & Sabretooth Design notes: - I think we can all agree that Hasbro's depiction of the GI Joe SEALs have been rather lacking. For the most part, they've all been portrayed in toy form as one-dimensional divers, armed with spear guns of all things (were they going spear-fishing?). When I first started this project, I had it in my head that I would update Torpedo and Wet-Suit and make them more "ground-based" in appearance. The problem with that approach, however, is that they start to lose their recognizability. My attempt at a compromise is to depict them wearing diving gear, but armed with contemporary surface weapons. This version of Wet-Suit is based on a conglomeration of his v1 (1986) and v3 (1992) designs. He has the "sea scooter" from the 1986 design, but I've armed him with an M79 grenade launcher (a proven "swimmable" weapon). - Sabretooth is my version of the unproduced 1988 figure of the same name. Since the original had no filecard, I just cobbled together his personal information, background, and training information from people I know (along with elements of my own experiences and training) -- admixed with a liberal dose of artistic/literary licence, of course. To read their full filecards, click on the Filecard Project link in my signature. |

I like the fact that Bazooka was a tank driver before he became a tank killer. The Joes need more tracked-armor operators. Also, many seem to forget that stalker is also a medic, as well as Falcon. Medics don't get much love, though they're a critical element of any platoon.
