Yeah that was a little too serendipitous.

It was the same thing with Hama's character-defining run on Wolverine, although I think Hama came up with a particularly novel solution to bypass the "loss of mystique" problem: by establishing that Wolverine's memory was a hodgepodge of fabricated implants and actual experiences, every revelation would actually add to the mystery surrounding the character (was the revealed "memory" real or an implant?). Unfortunately, later writers mistook Hama's device as giving them carte blanche to rewrite and reconstruct the character as they saw fit (bone claws -- ugh!). |

I loved Hama's Wolverine run. Best Wolverine run ever, followed by Claremont's opening of the ongoing.
Have you seen what Daniel Way is doing in Wolverine: Origins? Made it so some guy has been manipulating Wolverine this whole time and occasionaly mindwipes him. What crap...

Hama's early Wolverine work is some of the best writing ever applied to the character. It's just too bad that the latter part of his run was pretty much assimilated into the the crossover-happy wankfest that was the mid-1990s X-books. IIRC, Hama was against the idea of introducing the bone claws (as it was totally against a lot of the stuff that was firmly and thematically established about the character, even before Hama took over the title) but the option was the only one available to him after the events that occurred in the Lobdell-Nicieza penned Fatal Attractions cross-over (when Magneto tore the adamantium out of Wolverine's skeleton... makes for a nice "shock for shock's sake" scene, but it sort of leaves the writer on the regular Wolverine title painted into a corner with no reasonable way out).

I kind of prefer Snake Eyes' origin, or the origin of an "mysterious" character for that matter, to be done in such a way that we get little snippets of his backstory, and it's up to us to put them together.
That way, we get to know a little bit more about him but the mystery is left intact. |

Yeah, exactly. When Wolverine was forced to integrate more with the X-Community and that stuff it started losing it's luster. The whole "loses adamantium and becomes bestial" was STUPID!!
Prior to that, Hama had a great title going on. Now Wolverine is just bad. Although, I've read a couple issues of Jason Aaron's new Wolverine: Weapon X series and it's not bad, not bad at all. Hopefully he can keep it disconnected from the rest of the X-World. Also, since we're on the subject. I liked that they made Captain American Weapon I, that was cool, but everything Morrison did with The World and Fantomex and all the Weapons after Wolverine was dumb dumb dumb.

I can handle Snake Eyes's backstory more than I could seeing his face. I thought M.D. Bright's version was far, far too tame for what happened to him, and preferred it when they left it hidden from us.

Exactly. I think it was perfect how in "The Origin of Snake Eyes," Stalker tells part of the story, then Hawk, then (I think) Scarlett. It was as if, even the people closest to him only had limited information and had to piece it all together between themselves.

SE works best as a limited use character who's completely mysterious. He shows up, does his job, and disappears and you're left going "I don't know who the hell that was, but damn he was cool".
