With regards to the connotations associated with the flag and the hat, well, I can see multiple arguments going either way, each having their own merit. I have no real ties to the issues involved that surround the display of said items, but I just wanted to head off any potential criticism of their inclusion by saying that my use of those symbols was motivated by faithfulness to the original design intent, and not endorsement of any one interpretation of those symbols. |

I love Cross Country. Is that Tom Brady's face? Great update. I agree with you on keeping the hat and flag. It's not a big deal. For someone to make the association that it's supporting slavery is just wrong and really grasping.
Kind of funny, got into an "arguement" with someone here yesterday about if they make a new Cross Country if they will/can include the hat and flag. How did that end up? I personally like Cross-Country as he was one of the most southern Joes, but he had some good face time. Of course the figure was just awful due to that stupid head. The hat didn't bother me. It was his nose. Version 2 was much better, and he has an even bigger Flag on his back. His filecard is something else. YOJOE.COM | Cross Country I'm loving this team of cavalry Scouts you've assembled Zulu. Tripwire is great. Love the nod with the Japanese language to his monastery days. |

I've been a bit under the weather, so I need to comment on a bit more than everyone else. Rampage and Wreckage are nice updates to be sure, z. Nice to see someone acknowledging the issue of Hispanic under-representation in Joe as well. Although I'm kind of surprised to see you venturing into the post-ARAH stuff (although it makes me hopeful that perhaps on a later iteration of your project you'll get around to Crosshairs, Depth Charge and many more of the cool new sculpt guys). As always, you've got me itching to see your updated organizational list.

I know display of the Confederate flag is a controversial issue for some. Many consider the practice of contemporary display of the confederate flag to be an exercise in glorifying the slavery era but just as many also consider it as a legitimate symbol of their Southern US heritage, distinct from the practice of slavery.

Personally, I find it no more offensive than, say, somebody displaying the Spanish flag (which, by virtue of where I was born and raised, I associate with the 300 years of subjugation the Spanish empire imposed on the Philippine islands), the Japanese imperial colours (conquered the Philippines in particularly brutal fashion during WWII), and the American flag (it's estimated that the US Army killed anywhere between 200 000 to 1.5 million Filipino civilians during the Philippine-American War -- euphemistically termed in American history books until recently as a "pacification action" -- after having appropriated the country from Spain at the close of the 19th century). I'm not saying that there's any equivalence between any of those three examples and slavery in the Southern US, but it's the closest I have to a relatable experience to that of somebody who might take offense at the display of the Confederate flag, even in something as innocuous as GI Joe fan art.

Take the swastika for example: it has held significant religious meaning long before the Nazis got a hold of it. But if a person wears it with anti-Jewish sentiment attached to it, I hope you wouldn't tell a Jew who was offended by it that "It's not a big deal". One should never confuse "it doesn't bother me" with "it doesn't matter". All that said, I would hate to have seen you remove it from Cross-Country. It's a visual hallmark of his, and something that doesn't necessarily equate to someone being a racist. There are all kinds of people in the military, with all different kinds of points of view. And it would certainly be interesting to see how he explained wearing it to a guy like Roadblock (who grew up in Mississippi and probably encountered a lot of the same negative situations with it as I did). The update looks incredible (and I like what you did with Tripwire, who had previously been a generic EOD photograph). Last edited by Master Thespian; 07-09-2009 at 06:38 PM.. |

Zulu, Cross-country looks perfect. I'm impartial as to whether he wears the confederate flag. That's not the only thing that's symbolic of the South. There's more to Southerners than a history of slavery or the confederacy.
I agree that many see the flag as a symbol of racism but I also believe in certain freedoms, such as having the right to wear what you want and say what you want, even if it offends. I would never wear or wave the confederate flag because it's not something I'm interested in and because I know it's offensive to some. However, I don't want some old judge or politician deciding what is acceptable, according to their personal views. |

OK I picked up my 10 Joes from TRU today. Actually 12 but two are for my Nephew whose birthday is coming up. I dropped $100 and I still didn't find Hawk, Pit Commando, Helix, Scarlett, Scarlett (Armor), Covergirl, Sgt. Stone, Eel, Crimson Neo-Viper, Elite Viper, Flash or any of these guys:
C1 wave 2 Ice Viper (arctic assault) Snake Eyes (Paris pursuit ~trenchcoat) w/Timber (black & gray) Storm Shadow (Paris pursuit ~unmasked) Scarlett (desert ambush) Duke (reactive impact armor) Cobra Commander (roc) C1 wave 3 Duke (delta-6 accelerator suit) Ripcord Version (reactive impact armor) Snake Eyes (arctic assault) Rex 'The Doctor' Lewis (chief experimental doctor) Baroness (paris pursuit) Storm Shadow (arctic assault) Para-Viper (cobra paratrooper ~red/black repaint) So another 20 figures? Damn I just bought the Cobra Island Packs yesterday too. |

It got me thinking though. Was what I did when I changed Salvo's t-shirt slogan comparable to "censoring" Cross-Country's Confederacy-themed imagery? Thanks! Quote:

Yeah, I always loved that bit of characterization that Hama wrote for Tripwire. He probably wrote a bit of himself into Tripwire, seeing as how he was an E.O.D. specialist himself.

The changes from the prior version are minor. The most significant one is probably the inclusion of Taurus as the (civilian) EOD section leader. I know I initially wanted to use him as part of Action Force, but I've been reading a lot of John T. Reed's articles on elite units in my spare time, and something he wrote really stood out to me. Reed mentions that before all the hype and hoopla started painting SF and other special operations-capable forces as "supermen" making them something of a a fad among young recruits, immigrants from thrid world/underdeveloped nations actually made up a disproportionately large demographic of the special operations/SF community (which makes sense, as they already possess the foreign language/cultural immersion requirements implicit in many spec-ops assignments). I wanted my version of GI Joe to reflect that authentic pre-hype organizational make-up, which is why I've added Taurus (from Turkey), Switch Gears (from Colombia), and I still haven't worked out what I want Sabretooth to be. |

I know of a few other facts dervied from the file cards. but its late and this soldiers gottta get to bed
