I liked the COPS but they figures were just too big. I was never a fan of the big figures when a kid. I liked my 3 3/4" dammit, lol.
So am I alone in thinking the Dreadnoks weren't used right, and could have been so much better? Take away the outlandish looks, make them more street gang and not rejects from a bad '80s trip, make 'em more mobile and larger chapters (which DDP started doing, making more of 'em across the nation) and have the basis of a great mobile militia.

I'm not entirely sure how I'd make a "modern" version of the Dreadnoks, though. The idea of the Dreadnoks being a nation-wide umbrella organization for different outlaw biker groups (like what DDP did) is interesting, but I don't know how contemporary that is. I know the Hell's Angels still have a strong criminal element tied to them here in Canada (mostly engaged in cross-border tobacco products smuggling) but I think for the most part, the outlaw biker image has been largely sanitized by the legions of middle-aged retired business professionals who now comprise a large portion of the Harley-Davidson riding population, not to mention the cultural impact of shows like American Chopper. My point being, I guess, is that the outlaw biker "villain type" isn't nearly as relevant or threatening as it was 2 or 3 decades ago. The thing I'm wondering about is this: Is the outlaw biker motif an essential part of the Dreadnok concept? Can the Dreadnoks be updated to fit in the tenor of current times without the overt biker imagery, and still be considered faithful to the intent and design of the originals? |

It took a little digging, but I found his filecard.
If anyone's interested in reading up on the COPS characters, General Hawk has a nice fansite up. |

I hope so. Because they never really seemed to be guys the Joes should be wasting their time on.

well, i've been thinking, a lot of the visual hallmarks, if you will, of the outlaw biker can also be applied to the current common-sense notion of the rogue mercenary/private military contractor: The unkempt facial hair, the flamboyantly displayed musculature, dark/mirrored sunglasses.
DO IT. EDIT: I guess I might as well clue you in on more of my own little bit of "GI Joe sacrilege". I never had the 'Noks as Zartan's team. They worked for Major Bludd (an Australian mercenary as their leader just seemed to fit them better, IMO). It never made a whole lot of sense to me for them to be paired up with an international master of disguise. Last edited by Master Thespian; 07-03-2009 at 01:50 PM.. |

I suppose you could use 'em as a mercenary group. Yeah, the outlaw biker gang is a thing of the past. The Hells Angel's still have a presence (NH has one of the yearly biker gatherings and the HA have a chapter house in Laconia, the town where it happens) but as far as the criminal elements.. I'm sure it's still there but not as much.
I still think the Dreadnoks could work as a biker gang, especially where it's so low key now compared to what the idea was. Have chapter houses around and a core that roams the nation. Perfect roving militia. Stop in one city, grab some goods and move to the next city and drop them off. Hard to track, hard to follow, hard to keep tabs on because everytime they go into a city personal in the Ride could drop and new ones would pop on. You would literally have to have someone in the gang in order to keep track of which person was carrying the goods. And then if you want a little sabotage or whatever, the local chapter just runs out, does the damage and rides off into the sunset. Could work.

Neat idea. But the thing about having them as a local/domestic organization is that it puts them completely out of the Joes' jurisdiction, even if they are allied with international terrorist groups (Posse Comitatus Act and all that). They'd probably be more the concern of Homeland Security and/or the FBI. |

I never liked Zartan being in charge of the 'Noks.
1 - he just didn't fit in with 'em looks wise, Zandar and Zarana did, but not Zartan. 2 - they're not the best cover for a master of disguise. Zartan should always have been working solo. I don't like the 'Noks as they are now. Never did either. Make 'em an international gang. Bigger scope of operations, larger areas to "hide" in. Able to have more and diverse members. A gang like that could be ruling the roost, so to speak, in the old communist countries where there's a ton of illegal deals going on constantly.

I don't see the Dreadnoks wearing Khakis as a Mercenary private Military Contractors. I do like your Idea of a multi-chaptered outlaw Biker gang. They may not have to be as big as the big 4, but hypothetically they could be growing. And with Cobra backing they would grow quicker than just by selling Meth and smuggling Cigarettes.
What role they would have is a mystery. Plus they would need to be several hundred Strong. So Buzzer and Thrasher, and Torch would have to run their own chapters. Or new Dreadnok leaders would have to be established. They may only need 3 or 4 chapters. Like one in Florida, one in Texas/Mexico border, one in North Dakota/Canadian border. Plus a European Chapter and an Australian one. But I could see them smuggling Drugs, which is what biker gangs do. I don't know how Cobra would feel about that. I could see them as being good for starting riots, which may serve some purpose. As well as fighting other gangs, and stealing from other gangs, which may suit Cobra's needs. |
