Yeah, how are the Joes recruited? If it's a "secret" organization, then the commanders can't reccommend people for it.
Who sits there and combs thru all the reports and mission briefings of all the missions to see who performs better, who does great, etc..? The Joes would almost need people like Pro Sport Scouts. Guys that look thru the mission briefings, talk to commanders, review films of training, etc.. That's a good question of what Joe training is. It's got to involve different things from all the branches. I see alot of work integrating Marines working alongside SEaLs alongside Rangers. Breaking some habits learned and teaching new ones for integration.

Yeah what training would they get? We had a conversation way back when about who the Joe trainers are. I guess there is like 20 Joes who are listed as trainers of some sort.
I figure these guys may already have a lot of Weapons, Airborne, and Survival Training. I could see them getting equipment training. Like how to fly a Skyhawk. Maybe some Arctic Warfare training. (Although I see most of the Joes avoiding that one) Scuba and Demolitions, and Hand to hand would be ones that could always need to be refreshed. Infiltration, medical, Combat controller, and learning the art of Disguises would be useful. I see some guys being more rounded than others. Maybe the higher ranked NCOs would spend time training some of the younger guys, or Green Shirts? I mean PT or Drill Instructors, like Rock'n'Roll or Leatherneck won't do much for a guy like Roadblock. But Roadblock is not listed as Airborne Qualified anywhere on the filecards. So maybe Stalker who is a qualified as a Jumpmaster, trained Roadblock and any of the other guys we're not sure of. This may explain how some guys add different skills over the years. I wonder who trains all the Joes to fly Skystikers? |

As for training... I'd imagine that most Joes would have already received the bulk of their individual specialist training prior to Joe selection, and the training they do within the Joe team is more akin to unit-level/integrative/collective training. |

Some updates to make up for the lack of activity yesterday:
Gung-Ho, Pathfinder, Tollbooth Design notes: - updated Gung-Ho to be more similar to his classic look, giving him a classic M79 grenade launcher. As much as I liked him with the MGL-140, I think arming him with that weapon took away from the visual uniqueness of Hardball. As always, the filecards can be read by clicking on the link in my signature. Last edited by zuludelta; 07-01-2009 at 04:09 AM.. Reason: Gung-Ho picture updated |

I don't see the Joes as being so secret that the rest of the military doesn't know who they are. I view them as being like Delta Force-initially, their existence was denied to the public ("The only Delta we know is the airline"), but now, people know they exist, just not what missions they do. In the early comics, the Joes were occaisionally shown interacting with other military units, but they were still a "secret" group. Your points about integration are certainly valid, Troynos, and I'm sure it was easier the first couple of years as opposed to later on.

See, I'm not totally down with the idea of the GI Joe team as a covert organization. The idea of a "secret army" and federal non-transparency, in my mind, sort of runs against the whole idea of them being the leading tip of a democratic country's CT force (the whole "do as we say, not do as we do" thing). I can see them being covert in the same sense as the other JSOC units or the CIA's SOGs: their existence isn't kept a secret from the general public, but anything beyond that (such as mission profiles & outcomes, organizational details, etc.) is classified.

Wow these look great Zulu. Johnny Depp as Hunter S Thompson is great. And I love the update of my favorite Joe Gung-Ho. The look is great. My only comment, well I wish he was Bigger. I figure he is one of the Strongest Joes mostly due to the fact that he is portrayed as being bigger individual than most. Maybe bigger arms. I'm just gung-Ho for Gung-Ho. Also his cap seems a little over sized for his head.
Tollbooth as a Special Force Engineering Sgt, is friggin Brilliant. You mentioned you were going to do that but he is beyond my expectations. |

I've designated the Joe Team as the first JSMU (Joint Special Missions Unit), which recruits from the ranks of SFOD-D, DEVGRU, MARSOC, the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, Army Special Forces, the 75th Ranger Regiment, SAD/SOG and other special-trained units. Under the command of JSOC, the Joe Team combines the best of all branches. They select candidates based on specialities, training, combat experience, aptitude scores, physical evaluations and general recommendations, but none of these gets you a slot--just an interview.
Though the "J" Team is not a secretive unit, it conducts highly classified operations and functions much like a first-response unit to incidents involving national security. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 06-30-2009 at 11:22 PM.. |

I must say I'm impressed, Zulu. You've taken the one Joe I can't stand (Pathfinder) and made him look cool. Is that Johnny Depp's head on his body? Also, I've been toying with some ideas on how to make a couple of later Joes work. I decided that Bombstrike was more appropriate as an A-10 pilot, as opposed to a FAC or CCT. Alternatively, she could be a pilot or gunner aboard an AC-130. As for her brother Barrel Roll, I picture him as being an infiltrator and qualified sniper, but I'd completely omit the part about him being a pilot. Just my 2 cents.

Yep, that's Johnny Depp as Hunter S. Thompson playing Pathfinder. |
