I understand what you're saying, but I'm mostly referring to the extreme reactions I've seen so far--not by anyone in this thread--but the hyped up attention that's placed on some celebs.

I'm sure there will be all sorts of speculation and sensationalism about how he died, etc. like Princess Di and Ann Nicole... I just don't want to see this plastered on every television.

Five'll get you ten that that's what we're headed for in the next few weeks. This is why I hardly watch TV anymore. Just crass programming from sign-on to sign-off. Most of my spare time I just spend goofing off in Photoshop or listening to music.

Another figure that was a tough update:
Countdown Design notes: - Pretty tough to update an astronaut to fit in with a small SOF counterterrorist team, but I tried what I could. I think he looks okay now as a Command & Control officer, but I don't know if he's recognizable off the bat as Countdown. At this point though, I almost don't care anymore, given how much time I've spent stretching the boundaries of what he could be on the team whilst still retaining a significant resemblance to the original. Any Countdown fans out there that think he's wrongly represented within the context of what I'm trying to do, I'd like to hear how you would rationalize putting an astronaut on a JSOC unit. - He's got the AHMD helmet I initially used for my first attempt at creating Psyche-Out. As I mentioned before, it's an "augmented reality" helmet (as opposed to virtual reality) developed by L-3 Communications for the Air Force. The two clear composite plates suspended in front of the wearer allow for images to be projected on them from the helmet's built-in mini-projectors. These plates can be used as computer screens and as HMDs (which overlay data directly over the wearer's field of vision, so they get cool "Terminator-vision" that updates information on the objects you view as you view them). With the appropriate satellite communications gear, a wearer can even access real-time satellite imaging views and overlay topographical, meteorological, and even tactical data over a viewed expanse of environment. The helmet also has motion-sensing features which track the position of the wearer's head, so the user can remotely control, say, the cameras on a reconnaissance UAV or installation security cameras with head movements, and the view projected on the composite plates will adjust accordingly. - For his backpack, I just adapted an augmented reality computer backpack similar to the ones used in various computer science and engineering labs around the US and Canada, replacing the usual antenna with a more compact "fat" satellite antenna from an AN/PRC-117F combat net radio. Haven't been posting new composite images as of late because I've been rethinking the whole project. As much as I enjoy the collaborative aspect of working "in public" as it were, I think in my rush to take in everybody's ideas and suggestions, I ended up losing sight of the "more realistic" mandate I set for myself. This became more readily apparent to me as I sat down earlier this week to try and collate everything and to edit/update the text portions of the reference bible. The text portions were as I'd written them originally (almost 2 years to the day). In it, the Joes had no organic fixed-wing assets. As seen in the diagram I posted a few pages ago, the Joe team was supposed to be subordinate to JSOC, and thus, like Delta and DEVGRU, relied on JSOC's Joint Aviation Unit for clandestine long range fixed-wing transport.
Anyway, I'm rolling back the organization to that earlier version, whilst still incorporating most of the suggestions you guys have offered up here. It's not a drastic change from what I've posted before, but it will be scaled down in some ways (no more fixed wing assets) while expanded in others (I'm adding a reduced rifle platoon to supplement the first assault platoon): I've already updated many of the filecards to reflect those changes (the ones I've updated so far to reflect the organizational changes: Airborne, Blizzard, Chuckles, Clutch, Crankcase, Grid-Iron, Hardtop, Jinx, Recondo, Starduster, Steamroller, Super Trooper, Wild Card) Additionally, I've updated some of the images as necessary (replaced Airborne's helicopter crewman's helmet with a more traditional infantry helmet, for instance, since I've now got him as a detached assault trooper from the 101st Airborne, instead of a Night Stalker): There are a bunch of other minor changes I've done (some barely noticeable), but nothing that deserves their own post, so I'll just leave it up to you guys to notice the chages as you come across them. Also, here's Downtown and an updated GI Jane (who says I don't take to heart every single one of your comments and criticisms?): dude your concept art is great |

Also, since I'm assuming we're pretty much all in the same age group here (late 20s to early 30s), does the news of Fawcett's and Jackson's deaths make you feel slightly older? I mentioned Fawcett's death to a girl manning the till at the supermarket and she had this vacant stare, followed by a "Who?"

Agreed. I stick mostly to threads like this one for that very reason. People take it very personally if you disagree with them on something.

Agreed. What really gets me is mentioning Charlies Angels and getting "she wasent in that movie" as the response

Both are incredibly moving. I could have spent days in Arlington. What an amazing place. If you've never seen it, you have to watch the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. What a display of military professionalism. Rant time: I heard a quote by Rev. Al Sharpton on the radio this morning, basically he was calling out all those people that had spent the last years condemning Jackson that are now praising him. I mourn a celebrity only in the way that I won't ever get to enjoy their work anymore (Ledger) or for the years of entertainment they had given people (McMahon). I don't mourn them like I would a family member or a friend, and to see people that didn't know the person outside of their body of work going nuts is just weird.. Now someone like Angelina Jolie, who spends so much time helping out in the world, that's someone that deserves to be widely and publically mourned. A celebrity that does worthwhile things outside of their entertainment, or uses their celebrity to further worthy causes and doesn't just "talk" but actually walks the walk. I hate TV and the 'Net and all that, anything that makes a celebrity into...well.. a celebrity. I don't care if Denzel Washington or Jack Nicholson sit courtside at a Lakers game. My life is no different, it has no outcome or affect on the game... WHO CARES!! Now if Nicholson gave away his seats to underpriveleged kids for every game, then I would care. If you're famous for acting in a movie or singing a song, do something to be worthy of that fame. If people are going to be talking about you for decades, then do something worthy to be talked about. If not, then just go quietly into the background and let your body of work be your legacy. That's my rant for the day

Well, being in my late 30's, I'm definitely feeling old. I remember that "Thriller" was one of the first albums I got as an adolescent. I was never a huge MJ fan, but I liked his music, and "Thriller" had so many great songs. I agree that we as a culture have a hard time separating people from what they do or believe. Many of my patients last night were referring to Jackson as a "pedophile", even though it has never been proven that he was. As far as Larry, Chuck, et al, I'm probably happier not knowing what they personally believe. I'd rather just read their stories. And Farrah was certainly beautiful, but my favorite "Angel" was Jaclyn Smith
