Nope, the S-2 was originally Psyche-Out (whom I've placing somewhere else more appropriate). Thing about Ace is, based on the filecards (pre-1991, at least), as far as I know, he's the the only Joe officer who's even tangentially linked to the intelligence branch of his/her respective service. . AFAIK, there's no set limit to how long one can remain in the pilot utilization field. Theoretically, and barring deteriorating eyesight or other age-related physiological concerns, an officer can remain an active duty pilot until mandatory retirement (age 62), or until they get promoted and assigned to a staff or command position wherein piloting duties are no longer a part of the job. The Air Force has an "up or out" policy though, where an officer is "steered" into retirement if they haven't been promoted after a fixed amount of time (can't recall what it is for the Air Force) so an officer who's been spending too much time in the field officer grades as a pilot will eventually find himself out of the Air Force unless he makes his way out of the pilot field and starts "piloting a desk" instead.

If you look at Version 6 filecard he is even listed as counterintelligence agent.
YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Ace No one else who is an officer has Intelligence as a background. It's another example of the poor quality of the later filecards though, at least in terms of the amount of research they put in. The Air Force doesn't have counterintelligence agents. The closest thing they have to a HUMINT/Counterintelligence branch is the AFOSI. |

So yeah, makes me wonder why the fighter jocks would take desk jobs.

A couple of updated characters before I hit the sack:
Ambush & Psyche-Out Design notes: - Ambush was one of the last Joes my brother and I bought expressly for ourselves (the last three we bought were Freefall, Pathfinder, and Ambush... although we got our younger brother a Dusty & Sandstorm figure a year later, but he didn't really like the figure... he was more into the Ninja Turtles). I thought he was okay design-wise, nothing too garish or fantastical in nature, and the soft goods ghillie suit (although it was really just a small square of fabric mesh) was a nice touch at the time. Tried to recreate the classic look here, while going for a modern MARPAT interpretation (yes, this means I've taken the liberty of making Ambush a Marine). - The problem with Ambush, at least for me when I was a kid, was that no matter how seemingly cool he was written up in his filecard (what with the anecdote about him single-handedly abducting a Cobra officer from underneath a heavily-armed Cobra contingent), I couldn't get past the fact that he was the lowest ranking Joe, ever. Low rank wasn't so much of an issue before Ambush showed up... I didn't care if a Joe was an E-4, particularly because the majority of the Joe team is (or was) composed of E-4s. But Ambush wasn't just an E-3. He was the team's only E-3. Of course, that was the first thing I changed when I wrote an updated filecard to go with the composite image. - Always wondered what the "radar dishes" on the original Psyche-Out figure were for. The original filecard made some mention of Psyche-Out dabbling in the inducement of paranoia via low-frequency soundwaves or somesuch pseudoscientific claptrap, so I guess they were supposed to be parabolic reflectors of some sort. Anyway, I tried to make some sense of those visual elements by equipping this version of Psyche-Out with a parabolic mic instead, similar to what police and federal agents use in the conduct of voice intercept & surveillance operations. - In his filecard (which can be read by clicking on the Filecard Project link in my signature), I've rewritten Psyche-Out's function and role on the team. My take on him is that he's less of a PSYOP/deceptive warfare specialist and more of an operational/forensic psychologist & behavioural sciences consultant attached to the Joe team's clandestine services cell. The National Clandestine Service actually employs civilian psychologists & psychiatrists to assess the mental health status of their own operatives, and to help analyse and anticipate the behaviour of targeted individuals and organizations. The NCS frequently goes out of the traditional intelligence community when hiring technical experts, particularly because civilian-trained and educated experts are less prone to falling into the same cognitive traps and making the same "institutionalized" assumptions as their military-trained peers. Great Ambush update. He's one of the ones that's easy to make into a Marine as the "military" aspect of his filecard was pretty bland and not detailed.
In a couple of iterations of my Joes, I had made Pysche-Out into the team's profiler. I figured the team would need someone that could take an intelligence report and work out the motivations/possible tactics of the people the Joes would be facing. He'd be heavily involved in mission planning. Also would work in picking out the best team members for each mission.

Good stuff on both images, z. As I've said before, I'm finding myself more and more looking forward to seeing the later additions to the Joe team (although I'm eagerly awaiting Low Light, Wet Suit and Tollbooth... *hint hint* ). There just so much more latitude in both their visuals and histories. Realistically updated, while still looking unique and recognizable (which I was worried about the figures blending together as you went on, but you've seemed to sidestep that pitfall).

These look Great Zulu. Ambush as a Marine is an easy fit. I too had that problem with Ambush, his other problem is his lack of a chin. I liked Ambush but he always died.
I think the design of Psyche-Out is great, and his windbreaker gives him that Government agent look. The one thing I'm wondering about is he has absolutely no military training at all. It is certainly not required to work for NCS, but it sort of serves as a Badge of courage particularly when dealing with service personnel. Doesn't have to be much. But Every NCS guy I've known has had a military background. However, that was when I was living overseas and not the ones here in DC. Last edited by Loose Cannon; 06-24-2009 at 09:46 AM.. |

Seen the new vehicles? I'm loving that new Ferrett that has the Leatherneck repaint. Loving the T.O.W.-like missile it has on it that looks like it can be removed (it has a stand on it). That ATV, with the cargo areas on it, would make a great ambush vehicle. Drive that into the woods, set up the T.O.W. and away you go.
