No kiddin'! You sir are a better man than I. I made it to 1st Class before my troop disintigrated, although I stayed on as an Adult Leader when the next bunch of kids came up. I kinda miss it, acutally. I need to get back to doing the Order of the Arrow and such. |

Finally managed to update the Air Force pilot guys:
Ace, Ghostrider, Payload, Slipstream Design notes: - Didn't really do much to update Payload and Ghostrider form their previous versions except to update their unit patches. The more sgnificant changes are in their filecards - Slipstream was redesigned as a fighter pilot doubling as a TACP Air Liaison Officer. I substituted gaiters and a black jacket for the anti-g suit worn by the original figure to sort of keep the "layered clothing" theme going on. - I gave Ace an Air Force N3B parka, it's the closest piece of Air Force apparel I could find that even approximates the "Michelin Man" looking costume worn by the original figure (short fo an actual astronaut suit). I struggled with writing him up as an intelligence officer. His original filecard states that his secondary MOS is "Intelligence" but there were a number of problems with that: AFAIK, outside a limited selection of special duty assignments, the Air Force currently doesn't allow officers to simultaneously hold positions in two different career fields. There's no such thing as a "secondary MOS" for officers. What happens is much like in the Army... an officer gets in through an accession "job" (for example, in the Army, a freshly minted 2nd lieutenant can use infantry or military intelligence or artillery or any number of branches as their route of accession and then go into Special Forces when they've earned the necessary prerequisites). In the Air Force, "Pilot" and "Intelligence" are two different utilization fields. So there shouldn't be a problem, right? Have Ace come in via the pilot route, and then get him to reclass as an intelligence officer once he finishes pilot training. Except it isn't that simple. Signing up for pilot duty in the Air Force entails a 10 year minimum active duty service commitment in the pilot field. An officer candidate can't declare for a flight specialty and then move to a different utilization field partway through their service tenure unless it's for an exceptional reason (disability or injury, for one). The Air Force spends a lot of money training pilots, and it won't stand for not getting back a full return for that investment. Of course, it could be reasoned that Ace finished his 10 year commitment, and then re-upped with the intention to go into Intelligence. But it just seems like an awfully convoluted way to get there and would be awkward, too (he'd probably be a senior captain or a major, but he'd have less "operational seniority" than a 1st lieutenant or junior captain who's been in the intelligence utilization field from day one of their career). Anyway, the way I decided to do it, and feel free to disagree with me (although I don't think I'll budge on it this time... I've wasted way too much time rationalizing Ace's role on the team as it is), is that Ace fulfills the 10 year service minimum, gets out of the service, and then ends up working for the DIA (who employ a lot of former servicemen and ex-officers from all the 4 branches, using their prior military experience as a base for advanced intelligence training), and they in turn funnel him into the GI Joe team as the S2. Also updated the External Support Cell filecards that I've posted so far (Jinx, GI Joe Colton, GI Jane, Chuckles, Shooter, Mercer) to show that they're all sourced from the National Clandestine Service, and changed their duty identifiers to reflect the update. |

Won't get any comments on Ace from me. That makes alot of sense and works well.
If I had been you, and gotten rid of the physical air arm, I would have just dropped the pilots completely, but that would have been a waste of the models.

Good work making sense of that stuff, lol. Somehow, having Ace in charge of Intel fits him more than having him as an Aerial Refueling type of guy. I really like the change on Slipstream as well (both in terms of duty identifier and look).

Can't argue that. Was Ace always the S-2? I need to go back and look at old ones. I think this is a good use for Ace. His playboy looks can match his now intelligence background. I loved Ace in both his Comic and Cartoon appearances. By giving him a pilot background he now has a super agent quality to him. How many guys do you meet use to be Fighter pilots?
Sidenote my Wife's boss use to be a Captain for Air-Force One. He gets a lot of respect for that. Did you make Chuckles Clandestine Services as well? It not on the filecard if you did. |

Is there an age limit to how long can be a fighter pilot?
I mean, once you've beena fighter jock why would you move into another field (especially a "ground pounder" type field) unless it was because of age or injury?

I don't think so, well I think it's probably closer to Mandatory retirement age. Than start a new career path age. But I imagine these guys if they stay long enough they hit general and then they get behind a desk somewhere.
