Also, how do you guys interpret Grunt's Secondary Speciality--Artillery Coordinator? I assumed this was the same as an artillery observer, which is a Forward Observer or Fire Support Specialist (MOS 13F) in the Army.

Yeah, a lot of the old GI Joe MOSes (some of which were based on old Vietnam War-era MOS classification information) can easily be reinterpreted into current "real world" MOSes. Grunt's "artillery coordinator" is one (same as you, I listed his secondary MOS as Fire Support Specialist in the filecard I made for my "updated" version of him). |

Isn't that what his later filecards have him at?

Ah, nuts. Getting all confused in my old age. I think I did have Flash (and not Grunt) listed as having a Fire Support Specialist secondary MOS, though... ties in with all his laser stuff (since FOs/FS specialists do most of the combat "lasing" duties -- marking targets with laser designators and rangefiners -- in the military)

Sometimes, yes. Sometimes he's a Small Arms Attack Specialist (whatever *that* means). It's worth noting that the original and 25th filecards had two secondary MOSs. One was Small Arms Armorer and the other was Artillery Coordinator (the latter of which only appeared on his original and 25th filecards). He's had the variations of the Small Arms SMOS (real, imagined and in-between) on every filecard, though.

Been busy with non-filecard stuff (diagrams, articles, etc.) so I haven't been posting composited images lately. Here's an updated version of Deep-Six, though:
Deep-Six design notes: - After trying a few non-starter ideas for updating his deep sea diving suit, I ended up going back to his earliest comcis appearances, and tried to pin down how he was portrayed on land. Giving up on the diver suit idea, I decided to create my version of Deep-Six based on this look: page detail from GI Joe #28, October 1984 - I replaced the orange life jacket with a tactical flotation vest, and the white bucket hat (the "Gilligan hat") with a boonie hat printed with the NWU digital camo pattern. Replaced the blue slacks with NWU pants as well. One thing I've been busy with apart from the filecards is coming up with the GIJOE unit lineage and heraldry. I'm real big on that type of stuff, seeing as how it's a natural intersection of my graphics arts and militaria interests. I want to give the GI Joe team a sense of history. For example, the various US Army Special Forces Groups consider the Indian Scout and Seminole Negro Indian Scout units from the late 19th century and the World War II-era American-Canadian 1st Special Service Force as their predecessors in "spirit" and function (if not exactly traceable unit history). The crossed arrows of the Special Forces branch insignia and the arrowhead shape of the Special Forces shoulder patch (which Army SF adapted from the 1st Special Service Force's old unit patch) are a reference to the Indian Scouts of old. Additionally, the dagger found on the SF shoulder patch and the 1st Special Forces Group Distinctive Unit Insignia & Coat of Arms is supposed to represent the British-made Fairbarne-Sykes knife used by Canadian and American commandos of the 1st Special Service Force. Anyway, I wanted to make something similar for the Joe team. A unit as small as the Joe team wouldn't be authorized with its own coat of arms, though, so I settled for making distinctive unit insignia and a "non-issue" flash for use on berets and shoulder sleeves. Here's some early looks at them: Prototype 1st Joint Operations Expeditionary Group ("GIJOE") Distinctive Unit Insignia & beret flash/shoulder-sleeve insignia Symbolism of the Distinctive Unit insignia: The unit insignia was partially inspired by the unit insignia of the USSOCOM Joint Force Army Element. The crossed golden dagger, lightning bolt, trident, and anchor represent Army, Air Force, Navy, and USMC special operations-capable forces, respectively (in heraldic art, the colour gold is traditonally associated with excellence). The blue portion of the shield represents the sky and the sea, the green denotes land, and the black area is heraldic shorthand for stealth (the "V" shape is also meant to denote victory and power). The use of the black, gold, and gray elements are also meant to suggest the official unit colours of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). All of the insgnia's elements combined encapsulate the GIJOE team's status as a JSOC unit, its multi-service origins, and its ability to stealthily and clandestinely perform its missions on land, sea, and air. Symbolism of the Beret flash/Shoulder Sleeve insignia: The beret flash/SSI is simply the unit's 4-service emblem emblazoned on the JSOC flash, similar to DEVGRU's SSI, which consists of a Naval Special Warfare insgnia overlaid on the JSOC flash I still haven't made up my mind what text I want written on the unit insignia's scroll. I'm considering just writing the team's official name ("1st Joint Operations Expeditionary Group") but I'm also leaning towards putting in a Latin phrase or motto (both are accepted practices in modern DoD heraldry). Here's a list of Latin mottos I'm considering: - Ex scientia victoria: translates as "from knowledge, [comes] victory" (a play on "knowing is half the battle" :P) - Ne plus ultra: translates literally as "nothing greater" or "nothing beyond" (in practical usage, meant to mean "the best of the best") - Operibus anteire: leading the way with deeds (generally taken to mean as "actions, not words") - Stamus contra malum: We stand against evil - Opere et viritate: In action and truth (generally taken to mean as "letting actions speak for the truth") What do you guys think? Loving the designs. I like the first phrase, the one similar to "knowing is half the battle" (and I wonder how that works out in latin).
Like the homage to Deep Six's first appearance. That's great.
