So I figured out a use for Sky Patrol, it involves breaking up the unit but still...
I'm getting away from the "using only figures I have" because I have so many spots in my roster to fill. It's made up primarily of the figures I have, but I'm infilling other spots with other Joes. So for Sky Patrol, I'm dissolving the unit. Airwave becomes the TV Operator on the AC-130 (or would he be better as the Radar Operator on the Hawkeye?) Altitude heads up an airborne-inserted LRRP team (Skymate is on the unit, not sure of who else yet). Drop Zone is part of the Joe's Special Forces unit. Skydive leads up a Pararescue unit. Static Line is in the armory, responsible for maintaining all the aircraft weapon systems and ordanance. Airborne is renamed Red Cross and is part of Skydive's Pararescue unit.

The good thing about Sky Patrol is that you don't really lose anything by breaking them up and redistributing them elsewehere, since most of the individual members have some solid "secondary" purposes. I always thought they were a neat concept, undone by poorly designed action figures and some glaring errors in the filecards.

When you look at Sky Patrol, it's really set up like half of an ODA, except it isn't lead by a captain or warrant officer. Good concept, poor execution. Now, I have a question for you guys. In your Joeverses, how are members selected for the team? Are they recruited (ala Declassified), or do they "apply" and go through a selection process? A little of both? Just curious.

Recruited. No applications. But unit commanders can reccommend people for the Joe team, but it's up to Colton and Hawk to pick the final members.
hhhmmm... I think I need to add a Unit Personal Manager (Zulu, what would the official designation be??), someone that recruits and manages new Joe trainees and prospective Joes.

As far as a Unit personnel Manager. Well there is only one Joe with Personnel as his SMS. That would be Skydive. Another reason to make him a Captain, other than the glaring fact that he is outranked by a member of his own team. |

Sky Patrol was my holy grail for the better part of 15 years. So I love them. I like your use too Troy and like Zulu said you lose nothing by breaking them up. I don't have a para-rescue element, but my Airborne guys have that function. Red Cross is a good codename though. Personally I just use Sgt. Six.

hhhmm... yeah... having commander reccomendations for the Joe team kind of does defeat the purpose of being covert.
So yeah, they'd need a Joe Scouting Department.

Quick pic. Zulu, you wanted to see how the underground stuff would be? Here's the start.
The lower piece is the footprint of the armory. The upper piece is the first of four floors of barracks. Can see the personal elevators, one set going to the motor pool and hangers and the other going to the armory (there will be other stuff off that set).

A force manager always wants the best people possible for positions in a task force, and limiting the selection pool from a "pre-screened" list of unwitting candidates (who may or may not be willing to be recruited into the task force) is a sure way to not get that done. Volunteers are the way to go, because self-driven enthusiasm for the high-risk, low-reward special operations mission is something you just can't teach. There's a reason why all the JSOC units will only accept soldiers who have volunteered for entry, and they don't take in soldiers, no matter how exceptional and how well-qualified, who have been "nominated" for an SOF position by a commander. In the CIA, they have Core Collectors/Operation Officers, who are in charge of recruiting and "turning" foreign nationals, terrorists, and other potential adversaries, making them agents and double-agents working in the service of US intelligence interests either via coercion or inducement (this is how I view Mercer's role with the team). |
