Yeah I just found this, and I was surprised how many SES there are. Makes a great fit for your Colton. Lets face it Colton as a 4 star general would be running all of USSOCOM. yeah right. But the two SES guys in charge of Plans and Intelligence could make a great fill for a Zulu-Colton. The Operations Guy could be a Hawk as a Brigadier, but I think that was Flagg's Job, with Gen Austin above him as the Deputy Director. I need to find out who is part of that J3 structure. SEALs? Green Berets?

Anyway, that diagram doesn't have the actual unit breakdown of USSOCOM, but this one does (this is the same as the actual unit breakdown, except that I've added GI Joe in there... might take a while to load, it's over 800 kb in size): If you can't find GI Joe in that massive diagram I linked to, here's a detail picture showing where it is, and its relationship to DEVGRU and Delta Force: Last edited by zuludelta; 06-16-2009 at 04:14 PM.. Ha, yeah, I forgot to turn off the "resize" option when I uploaded the big-ass diagram. The link should take you to a properly sized diagram now, though.

Sweet just what I was looking for. There are only 3 Delta Squadrons? Leaving out support personnel thats only like 100 men at most. I like how the Joes just fit so nicely in that spot you have. The Navy and Marines are under the command of a two star versus the Army and Airforce 3 stars. I wonder how that plays out in the palnning rooms? But no matter the Joes Fall right under the control of the Joint Special Operations commander who is a 3 star. Although looking at it like this it makes the Delta and DEVGRU guys may face some stiff competetion. Times change eventually.

I think you might be confusing "squadron" with "squad". The Delta squadron is manned the same as an Army cavalry squadron (equivalent to the size of a battalion... about anywhere from 250 to 1000 people). It's still confusing though, especially since the USSOCOM Air Force units use the term squadron to refer to a different kind of organization (which is 100 to 300 personnel in size). The way USSOCOM documents use "squadron" in both the Army sense and the Air Force sense within the same diagram and organization in differing contexts makes it quite confusing.

My understanding is that a Delta force Squadron is about 22-25 men. I'm not sure if that includes support personnel. It probably doesn't. But that seems small to me still.

22-25 men sounds inordinately small for a squadron. I'm not familiar with Delta Force literature so I'll take the 22-25 men figure you quoted at face value... my guess is that that figure refers to the number of actual combat arms personnel, and there are probably somewhere between 100 to 200 combat support and combat service support people filling out the rest of the squadron.

Delta Force - The US Army's elite counter-terrorism unit, made up of three 150-man squadrons of specially trained professional soldiers, most of them in their late 20s or early 30s, products of a tortuously rigid selection process. The Army does not officially acknowledge that the unit exists. The Rangers called them ''the D-boys.''
Philadelphia Online | Blackhawk Down Has the whole book online I guess. So 150 men. I got the 22 from the Kill Bin laden book, but mostly by conjecture since it never gave any real numbers. And you know there are support personnel not even mentioned. He did use the term Squadron quite a bit, but he had such a personal relationship with all the members I wonder if he really only commanded a platoon, but used the term Squadron loosely. |

Could be just a loose usage of the term. The use of the term squadron outside of a cavalry context in itself sort of suggests that the Delta guys who bandy the term about aren't really concerned with technical language.
