- In the end, I went with something that I think is just as provocative as his original shirt slogan but one less likely to be misconstrued as an endorsement of fascism or violence driven by an attitude of moral superiority. The phrase is "Sic Semper Tyrannis," the state motto of Virginia (Salvo's home-state). Translated from Latin, it means "Thus Always To Tyrants" (it is sometimes mistranslated as "Death to all tyrants" although in colloquial usage, both translations are almost equivalent). A much more nuanced and intelligent-sounding proclamation, with a history that is just as controversial, interesting, and thought-provoking as the one it replaces (John Wilkes Booth famously stated the phrase before shooting Abraham Lincoln, and of course, it was originally attributed to Marcus Junius Brutus upon his murder of Julius Caesar).

Zulu I'm loving Salvo. I honestly say that Salvo was one of my favorite figures of the later Joes. He's hugely muscular, Seems tough, is an NCO. This was all before I even moved to his Hometown. So now I love him even more. then you go and top it off with an excellent update. Awesome.
Stalker too, but he's always cool in my book. Here are the names my wife came up with I wanted her to transliterate them but she had to do it to Russian to get something authentic sounding. Regional Antiterrorist Unit (RPP) National Security Directorate (UNB) Special National Security Force (SSBP) Special Security Team (SKB) (Sounds cool in Russian but Team is not something used in the military) Homeland Guard Forces (SOR) which looks like (COP) in Russian Special guard (SO) (spetsoxhrana) How about Steel Brigade? Well they wouldn't use that, but they wouldn't use October Guard either, so its up to you. The word terrorism is like "terrorisma" in Russian so I image this may be part of their function. Here's an interesting article on the Russian Security Forces. May give you some ideas for names to use. The Mutation of the Russian Secret services |

I like it, particularly the feature where it's carved into a mountain. Very reminiscent of the Cheyenne Mountain Directorate.

I'd call it a generic ammunition pouch belt since he's not using it with an automatic rifle, but yeah, that is a BAR belt. Good eye.

But yeah, I'm happy with what's on Salvo's shirt now, particularly because of its connection to his home-state. Quote:

Yeah, that Stalker image took some doing.
Here are two new paratroopers: Free Fall & Altitude design notes: - Free Fall was, I think, the last ARAH Joe I ever bought for myself (I bought the Dusty v3 that came out a year later, but as a gift for my younger brother). As such, he's a bit of a nostalgic favourite of mine. There's nothing really to talk about visuals-wise, except to say that the figure took a lot more work than I expected. I couldn't find any pictures of any HALO jumpers wearing multicam, so I had to retexture the main figure pretty extensively. - With regards to Free Fall's filecard, I updated his background a fair bit to suit my idea of him being an elite paratrooper. I kept infantry as his secondary MOS, but gave him a Civil Affairs Specialist primary MOS. Most people have a very limited notion of "Special Operations," recognizing only the media-popular units like the Rangers, the Green Berets/SF, SEALs, and Force Recon/MARSOC. One of the more important aspects of the SOF arena is Civil Affairs/Civil-Military Cooperation. All Civil Affairs Specialists have to graduate from Airborne School and many of the soldiers who undergo NCO reclassification into CA are ranger-parachutists (only promotable E-5s and up are eligible for reclassification). From a certain perspective, a ranger-parachutist who reclassifies into Civil Affairs will have many of the same practical skills as a Special Forces sergeant: they're trained in airborne/light infantry tactics, languages and cultural awareness, and most of them have extensive civilian education as well. - The reclassification to CA also gives a practical outlet for Free Fall's "master's degree in Eastern Philosophy" (which I've adapted ino an actual existing program) as stated in his original filecard. - Altitude's costume/uniform posed an interesting challenge. All the Sky Patrol toys were repaints of the 1986 Slipstream figure, given newly sculpted heads. I couldn't come up with any reason for Altitude, or any other paratrooper for that matter, to wear a fighter pilot's g-suit like Slipstream is wearing, so I ended up giving him a standard jumpsuit, done up in colours reminiscent of the original figure. - For his face, I used noted First Nations actor Adam Beach (most famous for his role on Windtalkers), although I changed his head so that it sports the famous, close-cropped "Ranger mohawk" |

Those all look good, thanks to the both of you for taking the time to come up with these. Spetsoxhrana is really catching my eye, though. Simple, and it has twin connections to spetsnaz and Oktober Guard. How do you spell it in Cyrillic though? Just referencing how spetsnaz and oxhrana are spelled in Cyrillic, I'm assuming spetsoxhrana is spelled like this: Is that right? |

I was able to tell who both of these guys were without looking at the names, so that's always ace. Nice choice on Freefall's MOS as well. I LOVE the mohawk on Altitude. It adds a bit of flair to him. As the project goes on, I find myself wishing more and more that we could get a clear view of everyone's face (not named Snake Eyes). It's probably just my own hangup, and I'm still pleased with both of these images.

Zulu Freefall is awesome. Makes me even sadder that he will most likely never be updated to the 25th line.
Love the Civil Affairs angle. I kind of think this may be what they were going with for Super Trooper. I think 87 was one of the most complete years in terms of GIJoe expanding into all aspects of Special Operations. I don't know if this was intended or not. I see it like this. Say you invade a Country like Iraq and set up pockets of power. I mean Day one of the invasion. To do this everyone needs parachute training. You prop up the local government that supports you, and provide security, and root out the resistance the best you can. 87 the Joes got Psyche-Out for psyche-ops. (Crucial at this early stage of the game) Then we have Law who was expressed as having airborne training. You need these guys who are security experts there to establish a working environment. They also serve as bodyguards for Judges and other dignitaries or high level prisoners. We got Chuckles who also would take some of this burden from Law as possibly an investigator for finding individuals they are looking for as well as bodyguard service. (I see Chuckles as somewhat of a bounty hunter/Marshall type) Falcon and Outback (who just seems Green Beret to me) would be mobilizing the sympathetic Forces. Sneak Peek as Advance Recon is so far behind enemy lines he is one of the first guys dropped in. Also necessary for invasion operations Crazylegs. More Paratrooper goodness, and a Forward Artillery Observer. Tunnel Rat, Well one of the best figures of all. He seems even more relevant as an EOD combat engineer in today's war on terror. Gung-Ho in dress blues just looks like a Marine Security Guard that is at every embassy around the world. then we get the offer for Super Trooper. Although Public Affairs is not Civil Affairs I feel like that should have been the intention. Particularly because of his Airborne Training. |

I think 87 was one of the most complete years in terms of GIJoe expanding into all aspects of Special Operations. I don't know if this was intended or not. I see it like this... [snip] And speaking of SF, here's an updated Flint and GI Jane: Flint & GI Jane design notes: - Wanted a rendition of Flint that was more faithful to his original uniform/costume. I guess he disproves the theory that the size and gaudiness of a man's belt buckle is inversely proportional to his IQ - Had a lot of fun writing GI Jane's filecard. It was pretty much just me creating my idealized woman: a person with a twin background in a health/biology-related discipline (in Jane's case, nursing) and advanced applied mathematics. And a nice rack . As with Joe Colton, she didn't fall under the "contemporary camo only" rule I set for my redesigns, to suggest that she's older than the typical Joe (while not making it explicitly known one way or another in the filecard), which is why I kitted her out in ERDL/M81 pattern pants (a staple of the 1980s, and still the forest-themed camo pattern of choice in many countries). Also updated her filecard so that she's a computer/software engineer specializing in discrete-event simulation and in the use advanced mathematical models to analyse and predict combat outcomes and opposing force behaviour instead of the original physicist/weapons developer (which is cool and all -- no offense to the physicists out there reading this -- but not the type of thing a CT unit like GI Joe would probably have a consistent and constant requirement for). As always, the full filecards can be accessed by clicking on the Filecard Project link in my signature. Last edited by zuludelta; 06-13-2009 at 02:26 PM.. Reason: pictures updated |
