I'm not zulu, but I can refer you to where he addressed it:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/770649-post6192.html Now what he's doing with the Russian members of the Guard is another question... Very much looking forward to seeing those.

Zulu, I don't know if it's been asked/answered anywhere, but when you do the "bad guys", were you planning on including the Oktober Guard? I know they didn't get figures until the 2000s, but they apparently fairly frequently in the comics from 1982-onward, and I'd LOVE to see your take on the team.
Anyway, I'm intent on using the original Oktober Guard characters, even if it means no longer using them in the original Soviet/Eastern Bloc context. I'm thinking of using the non-Russian members of the original Oktober Guard (Brekhov is Ukrainian, Daina is Czech, Schrage is German, and Horror-Show is Georgian) as members of a new and modernised NATO/United Nations-aligned "Action Force" (I'm actually thinking of making Brekhov as their leader). I might even throw in Wong (the cartoon-only member of the Oktober Guard). EDIT: looks like Master Thespian beat me to it... should have really hit the "submit" button before going on that bathroom break Quote:

Isn't Gorky a Czech like Daina? I thought he was when he was in the DDP series and got killed off for being a traitor.
There was another member of the Guard that appeared in America's Elite during WW3.

As for who falls where: It should be noted that the Russian military is open to non-Russian citizens of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The only caveat being that they could not participate in elite units (but like most things, there could be some reason for an exception). So Brekhov and Horror-Show could be put onto the Russian team (if you start to get worn down and don't want to do Red Star and Big Bear ;) ) My memory on this is a bit fuzzy, but I could have sworn he was Russian and was killed because he betrayed Destro. He may be Russian. I don't remember. I thought he was Czech and that's why he was working with the Czech mobsters.

The Oktober Guard are my favourite non-Hama GI Joe characters from the original Marvel comic book series. If you didn't already know, Hama didn't "create" the Oktober Guard. Much like how GI Joe had its thematic roots in a non-GI Joe Marvel comic book idea (as a part of SHIELD named "Fury Force"), the Oktober Guard were actually taken from a short story in Bizarre Adventures #31 written by Tom DeFalco and illustrated by Herb Trimpe (who would later illustrate and co-plot GI Joe #6, Oktober Guard's first appearance in the "GI Joe universe"), where they were called "Pravda Patrol" (Truth Patrol). Their leader was Captain Yuri (who would later be renamed by Hama and Trimpe as Colonel Brekhov), Sachi (an early version of Daina), Mouse (a Stormavik prototype), Striker (Schrage's conceptual predecessor), and Big Bear (a Horror-Show prototype, but would later emerge in the early 1990s as a stand-alone Oktober Guard character).
Speaking of Trimpe, they just added him as a guest at the Heroes Con next weekend. Woo!

Lt Gorky is Russian.
My wife speaks Russian Zulu, maybe I could ask her for a Patriotic Nationalistic name to use, which connotes the same amount of pride in most Russians. My guess defeating Hitler or defeating Napolean. But maybe something modern is better. Like the FSB NKVD I just don't know what they stand for. They would most likely have their hands full fighting Organized crime which is terrible in Russia. I've been to St. Petersburg once, and a few things struck me about that place. One: Russians drink a lot of beer. 9AM I'm talking the carts are out on the street. Two:They take a lot of holidays. There was a National Border Patrol Day/ National Linquist Day. Just an excuse to party I guess. Three: The Siege of Leningrad is a big deal to them. To the point that anyone who lived through that, can ride the Metro/trolley for free. Visit the Hermitage for Free. And who knows what else. But they walk around with their medals on. So Dragonsky would own that town. ***EDIT Until I just looked again I had always assumed that Dragonsky was from St. Petersburg. That is no where in the filecards. He's from Moscow. Although he was a little boy in WW2. Last edited by Loose Cannon; 06-11-2009 at 12:44 PM.. |
