So I'm thinking I'm going to redo the base. It's gotten too big and unwieldy and went away from my original concept. As it grew it created new functions. I have landscapers.
Landscapers at a covert military installation???? But they were needed because of the size and complexity. An on-base emergency rescue unit? Again because of the size it was needed. And because of the need of so many buildings, I was finding myself getting away from being able to spend anytime on the detailing of the buildings. Let alone the size of the file, and hadn't even gotten to the fun parts yet, the motor pool and all that. So now I'm getting to a smaller base. Means some things won't "exist". Smaller runway for one thing, so I think the Joes will be using plenty of harriers. But the Joe air force, at least the fighter jets, was never really that useful now was it? How many dogfights do they really get into? So they'll be gettting alot of VTOL craft. Air-to-ground attack planes like the A-10 are more useful to the Joes. So they'll still have the C-130 and AC-130 and a stealth fighter but as for the rest... We'll see. But I'm trimming the personal ALOT. The size of the base itself dictated a large security force. Now that gets trimmed down. No base maintenance personal, no landscapers. No baseball field and stuff like that. There will still be a PX, they're still a covert unit and "hidden". I think I'll be more happy with this one when it's done.

I know. Alot of those guys from that era got the shaft: Recoil, Ambush, Backblast, Salvo, Grid-Iron, etc.. Big Ben got the most spotlight it seems. Recoil and Ambush were background characters in the TA war. Backblast appeared with Rampart. Salvo in that one issue in TA with Metalhead. Grid-Iron never appeared in the comics?

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that the Skystrikers and such are basically just there for escort. To provide fighter cover and escort for the C-130s and such. I see the Joes employing more air-to-ground attack craft. So then are the air force personal at the off-site landing strip/hanger or are they at the PIT? If I was to do off-site, I'd do a combination harbor/air base. But I think I've got a way to still do the airbase at the main base, and keep the size/scale of it down. The only thing I'd be lacking would be the harbor, and I could probably add that "fairly" easily. I also want to get back to more of an "out-there" kind of base for the Joes, like was shown in the comics. It wont' be "PIT-City" like in IDW, but something more along the lines of "The Rock" from America's Elite.

Kinda off-topic - how easy is SketchUp to use? I'm thinking about using it for an unrelated-project.

It's pretty easy to learn. Doing the basics is pretty easy. You can teach yourself how to do it in no time. Like anything, the harder the thing you want to do, the more in-depth you have to get. But to do basic models, it's very easy to learn to use.

I've tried to clarify things by editing my previous post (even I get all addled by the FMs sometimes).
Here's how it breaks down (or how it used to be broken down before SBCT came along and added another layer of confusion): - You've got a regimental fire support officer (FSO), a captain or a major, normally assigned to the regiment's headqaurters company, directly advising the regimental commander - The FSO supervises the Battalion Fire Support Headqurters (the headqurters itself is composed of a Senior Fire Support NCO and 2 fire support specialists) - The Battalion Fire Support Headqurters oversees three 9-man Fire Support Teams or FISTs (the FISTs are listed as battalion-level assets) - one FIST is normally assigned to a rifle company (take note that it still "belongs" to the battalion, and not to the subordinate company, even though it maneuvers and operates with the company it's supporting) - Each Fire Support team can be further broken down into three 3-man Forward Observer Parties (each party consists of a forward observer/lead fire support specialist, an assistant fire support specialist, and a radio operator, but it isn't unusual to see 2-man parties consisting of a forward observer and a combination radio operator/assistant fire support specialist, particualrly when there isn't enough manpower to go around or if stealth and speed are more important than operational redundancy). - Individual forward observer parties can then be assigned to the rifle company's individual rifle platoons. Hope that clears it up. Yeah, the FMs are confusing. Some sections even seem to contradict each other. For instance, there's mention of a company-level FSO but he's not organic to the company HQ or any other unit in the company, and he isn't listed separately under battalion personnel, although there is a battalion FSO (capt) specified and a regimental FSO (major). Damn, I'm gonna have to make an appointment and speak to the Regimental Commander about this. Do you think he'll be available on Friday? |

Wonder if they do that on purpose? Put confusing information up where they know people can view it?
