So here's a question about fire support elements: Is there a company-level FSO as well as a battalion-level FSO and brigade-level FSO? The Battalion FIST HQ consists of a Fire Support NCO and two specialists run by an FSO, and the FIST itself has three two-man FO parties, usually one assigned to each rifle platoon but I've read that the FSO is typically a 2nd or 1st LT, which doesn't seem correct for a battalion-level FSO.
With the new Force XXI reorganization, the regiment has been replaced by the brigade as the basic unit of organization, and the regimental fire support element has been replaced with the "SBCT Fires & Effects Coordination Cell." The regimental fire support officer and the SBCT "deputy effects coordination officer" generally fulfill the same roles and have the same rank (major or promotable captain), though, so the changes are mostly nominal in nature. This has also necessitated the addition of a new intermediate level of fire coordination, which has resulted in the creation of the "Fire Support Element" (led by a captain or 1st lieutenant-promotable) at the SBCT battalion level. which fills that gap between the SBCT Fires & Effects Coordination Cell and the SBCT company's Fire Support Team (which is led by a 1st or 2nd lieutenant) Last edited by zuludelta; 06-09-2009 at 03:21 PM.. |

"The fire support team (FIST) headquarters is supervised by the battalion fire support officer. It consists of the fire support sergeant and two fire support specialists. The headquarters controls three 9-man fire support teams. These teams are normally with the ranger rifle companies in a habitual support relationship." My question is: who exactly makes up the 9-man team that gets assigned to each company? Since each of the three rifle platoons in a company gets an observer party, made up of an FO and an RTO, six of those nine men are accounted for. The other three I assumed consisted of the Fire Support NCO and two Fire Support Specialists. But what about the company-level FSO? I'm confused. The FM's are useful but very unclear sometimes. |

Zulu, are the Ranger's adopting the Brigade Combat Team structure as well? The SBCT FMs are available online but for some reason the FM 3-90.6 Brigade Combat Team and
FM 3-90.61 Brigade Special Troops Battalion are not. Are these documents available to the public yet? |

I'm not too fond of the BCT structure. It was was designed around the Stryker IAV, which I think is an ass-backwards way of doing things... why organize your unit around a piece of equipment? Wouldn't it be better to just find equipment that fits the current organizational profile and parameters? And what happens when General Dynamics or Northrop-Grumman or whoever else convinces the Army brass that they need a new armoured fighting vehicle with different manning requirements? Do they blow up the SBCT and re-organize around some new toy all over again? Last edited by zuludelta; 06-09-2009 at 03:32 PM.. |

I don't know for certain. I hope not. Standardization shouldn't be a goal in itself, it's just a means to a desirable end and I don't know how shifting to BCT structure would benefit the 75th RR (particularly since they don't have any Strykers organic to the prganization... they still mainly use converted Land Rovers and HMMWVs, AFAIK).

Sometimes the fictional works best, gets rid of the politics and puts a good dose of common sense into the works.

Here's how it breaks down (or how it used to be broken down before SBCT came along and added another layer of confusion): - You've got a regimental fire support officer (FSO), a captain or a major, normally assigned to the regiment's headqaurters company, directly advising the regimental commander - The FSO supervises the Battalion Fire Support Headqurters (the headqurters itself is composed of a Senior Fire Support NCO and 2 fire support specialists) - The Battalion Fire Support Headqurters oversees three 9-man Fire Support Teams or FISTs (the FISTs are listed as battalion-level assets) - one FIST is normally assigned to a rifle company (take note that it still "belongs" to the battalion, and not to the subordinate company, even though it maneuvers and operates with the company it's supporting) - Each Fire Support team can be further broken down into three 3-man Forward Observer Parties (each party consists of a forward observer/lead fire support specialist, an assistant fire support specialist, and a radio operator, but it isn't unusual to see 2-man parties consisting of a forward observer and a combination radio operator/assistant fire support specialist, particualrly when there isn't enough manpower to go around or if stealth and speed are more important than operational redundancy). - Individual forward observer parties can then be assigned to the rifle company's individual rifle platoons. Hope that clears it up. |

See more reason for an underwater Aircraft carrier. No Escort. And you can't find me. Forget about communications. This is off the books and has to be fast. But your idea is a perfectly sensible one. As long as it has some Helicopter capability. VTOL? |
